Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amber Higgenbottom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amber, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve created was back in my hometown of Memphis,TN. I was inspired by my grandparents community where I spent a lot of time growing up. A place where I could let my imagination run free. This community is known as the second largest historically black neighborhood in the US succeeding Harlem. There is a building called The Orange Mound Tower and it has been abandoned my whole life. Which is not uncommon in majority African American communities and communities of color to have multiple abandoned properties scattered through out the neighborhood. Until recently, a couple of local creative trailblazers took ownership of the tower and gave it new life, a new vision. It will be a hub for African American innovators, artists, creatives and entrepreneurs. A place where their talents can be fully realized and celebrated. I wanted to pay homage to them with a floral installation to express how much this meant to me. Every detail of the piece had a significant meaning, it represents ‘giving beauty for ashes”. This is something I could’ve only dreamed of for this community and because of their efforts and initiative it has become a dream realized.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been a creative human. I was always rebellious against math but art, poetry and writing made me feel understood. It helped me to find my voice. It wasn’t until I entered the event industry back in 2015 that I discovered another outlet that allowed me to use my talents in a different way. I began a new career in the event industry and started with a company that specialized in a variety of event experiences from weddings, to galas, private soiree’s and even fashion shows. My eye for detail landed me a position in the floral studio. I was bright eyed and bushy tailed it was as if the rooms we transformed were blank canvases and the decor/flowers became the storytellers. I’ve been a floral designer for 8 years now and I’m constantly striving to develop as a designer. I continue to challenge myself by designing “outside of the vase” by incorporating mixed media and sustainable products that still speak the essence of the natural elements.
It has become more than an occupation for me, floral design or as I like to call it ‘floral artistry’ is a form of ministry, it’s a way to co-create with nature and cultivate genuine connections. It keeps me connected to my love for nature and community, from that passion The Garden Nomad was born.
The Garden Nomad is a personal brand. Its curated to highlight my journey as a creative while raising awareness about the importance of stewarding over the beauty of nature, while acknowledging the many benefits it provides.
The Garden Nomad Etsy store will launch this Fall, showcasing handmade pieces from a new collection I’ve been creating. A percentage of proceeds will go to local farmers and community garden initiatives.
“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”- John Muir

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
If I had to pinpoint a mission that fuels my creative journey it would be community. There is nothing like finding your tribe and creating genuine connections with like minded people. Being around others that can ‘nerd out’ with you about similar passions keeps me inspired. I value what it means to share a piece of yourself with people who make space for you, to be you. It’s healing and empowering! Representation also takes center stage when it comes to my ‘why’. I want to use my platform to dismantle any stigmas around people of color in green spaces.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding thing I’ve gained from being an artist/creative is a greater sense of self. I’ve been given an opportunity to capture the beauty of nature in the way that I see it. I get to share that embodiment with others through my designs. Reminding people that no matter what’s going on in the world try to find the beauty in the ashes and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
