We were lucky to catch up with Amber Henderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a customer success story with us?
One client story that stands out to me is a young woman who came to me after years of struggling with self-esteem due to traction alopecia from years of tight hairstyles and extensions. She was hesitant about starting her loc journey because she felt like she had “lost too much” to feel confident again — emotionally and physically.
From the first consultation, I made it clear that we were going to take a gentle, holistic approach. We worked on her scalp health, simplified her routine, and started her locs in a way that respected the areas that needed time to heal. I also coached her on how to protect her energy during this transformation — because starting locs isn’t just a hair journey, it’s a self-love journey.
Over the months, her hair started to fill in. But even more powerful than that — her confidence came back. I remember the day she told me, “I finally love looking at myself again.” That hit me. Because while I was focused on retwists and regrowth, she was rediscovering herself in the mirror.
Now she’s one of my most consistent clients, and she’s even shared her story online to encourage others. That experience reminded me that being a loctician isn’t just about hair — it’s about helping people feel rooted, restored, and seen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Amber Henderson — the founder of Beauty Defined, a Houston-based brand rooted in intentional loc care, empowerment, and education. I’m a professional loctician and creative entrepreneur with a deep passion for helping people reconnect with their natural beauty and walk confidently in their journey — both inside and out.
My path into this industry started with my own self-discovery. As a young mother navigating life, identity, and beauty standards, I found that locs weren’t just a hairstyle — they were a form of healing, expression, and reclaiming power. That experience inspired me to turn a personal passion into a profession, creating a safe space for others who wanted the same freedom and confidence.
At Beauty Defined, I specialize in natural hair care with a focus on locs — offering services like starter locs, maintenance, repairs, and education on long-term loc health. But more than that, I offer peace of mind and guidance. Many of my clients come to me unsure of where to begin or struggling with hair damage, low self-esteem, or misinformation about locs. I make it a point to educate them throughout the process — from consultations to aftercare — so they feel supported, empowered, and celebrated every step of the way.
What sets Beauty Defined apart is the experience: my vibe is professional yet relaxed, my approach is gentle and customized, and my mission is clear — to help clients feel beautiful, defined by their own standards, not society’s. I also create educational content to help others care for their hair between visits, which has been a powerful tool for building trust and community online.
What I’m most proud of is the impact. It’s not just about retwists or clean parts — it’s about witnessing the transformation in someone’s confidence, their energy, and their self-image. Seeing my clients blossom into their full selves makes everything I do worth it.
If you’re looking for a loctician who truly cares — about the health of your hair, your time, and your journey — Beauty Defined is the place for you.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been a combination of consistency, connection, and results. As a loctician, I’m not just providing a service — I’m helping people feel confident, seen, and cared for. I’ve built my reputation by consistently delivering quality results over time, which keeps clients coming back and encourages them to refer others.
My approach is very personal. I take time to understand each client’s hair, goals, and lifestyle so I can tailor my service and educate them on how to care for their locs in between visits. That trust builds loyalty — and it shows. I’ve been fortunate to earn over 500 five-star reviews on my website, all from clients who’ve experienced the level of attention, respect, and professionalism I bring to every appointment.
Long-term, I’ve learned that flashy marketing can get attention, but consistency in results and how you make people feel is what builds a lasting brand. Beauty Defined continues to grow because I prioritize both — and I make sure every client walks out feeling valued and confident.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that really illustrates my resilience is simply the fact that I’m still standing — over 5 years in business, and stronger than ever.
I launched Beauty Defined with passion and a vision, but I quickly learned that entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. When the pandemic hit, I had to shut down my salon space with no clear idea of when — or if — I’d be able to reopen. Like many in the beauty industry, I watched my income vanish overnight. But instead of panicking, I pivoted. I stayed connected with my clients virtually, gave at-home care tips, and doubled down on creating value through education. That kept the trust alive — and when the doors opened back up, my clients came right back with even more loyalty.
And then came inflation. Rising costs meant re-evaluating everything — from product suppliers to pricing — while still making sure my clients felt supported and valued. Through it all, I never compromised the quality of my service or the intention behind my brand.
What’s kept me going is my why. I’m not just doing hair — I’m helping people heal, grow, and feel proud of who they are. That purpose pushes me to keep adapting, keep showing up, and keep serving — no matter the challenges.
Running Beauty Defined through some of the toughest years our industry has ever seen proved to me that I’m not just a stylist. I’m a businesswoman, a problem-solver, and most importantly — I’m resilient.
