We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber DeBoy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Amber, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.

I took a large risk during the 2020 Covid pandemic. My wife and I moved to San Diego from the Midwest one week after I graduated with my Master’s in Social Work. Shortly after arriving, I was finding it difficult to get an interview for any jobs relating to my field. I was beginning to feel bored, stir crazy and purposeless. I started thinking about providing cleaning services as a way to bring in some income. I had worked for several cleaning companies in the past (shoutout to C&T!) and cleaned many friends and family members’ houses over the years. I always felt that I was happiest when I was making homes look beautiful. I felt as though cleaning was a skill I was naturally good at and it rarely felt like hard work because I enjoyed doing it. The restlessness eventually got the best of me and I sat down to build a website. A few keystrokes later, Order & Scrub was born. I haven’t looked back since.

Amber, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Amber DeBoy and I am the owner of Order & Scrub, Professional Home Cleaning Services. I started Order & Scrub 2.5 years ago with the idea that I would provide the best and most detailed home cleans in San Diego. I quickly discovered through experience that we were providing so much more than that. The complete Order & Scrub experience makes our clients fall in love with their homes each time we are in it. Our specialty is keeping homes clean, fresh, and cozy by providing deep cleaning, decluttering, styling, and maintenance services that are unique to each client’s lifestyle. I would say we are most proud of the relationships we have built with our clients and the reputation we have built and maintained. A few important things I would want potential clients to know about Order & Scrub is that we value transparency, effective communication, building trusting relationships, and providing quality and professional cleaning experiences. Most importantly, we absolutely love what we do.❤

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I believe that my approachable/professional attitude paired with my dedication to hard work allowed me to build genuine relationships with my clients. I have found that by being consistent in maintaining relationships and in providing excellent services, Order & Scrub’s reputation steadily builds in great, positive ways.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?

I always tell my wife that if a camera crew followed around a cleaning business during the work week, it would make for great reality TV. I have learned homes inside and out by experiencing close calls. Since starting the business I have caught falling chandeliers, squirmed my body under a gate to get to my car after a parking garage closed (cleaners work late!), chased cats and dogs, saved numerous toppling tchotchkes, and much more. I use each experience as a lesson to improve the business as I am always learning new ways to be more careful, delicate, and observant.
