We were lucky to catch up with Amber Cronin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
When I first started Moody Blue Events, I was part owner of my family bakery. I was already meeting with wedding clients about their desserts, and I just really clicked with one of those clients. After spending hours at our tasting talking about everything weddings, she mentioned she was still looking for a day of coordinator so I jumped on that and mentioned I had just started my own wedding planning business and was looking to start booking clients. Since we had already built that relationship she said well I would love to have your help with that as well. And from there I gained my first real booking! It gave me the confidence I needed to start talking with more people about it and I ended up booking several weddings right after that one!
Amber, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ending up in the wedding industry was the last place I expected to ever be. I dabbled at college life but never made it past my 2 year degree. School wasn’t for me, and although I gave it my best try it just never really clicked. I started my professional career as a bank teller in my early 20’s and moved into retail management from there. I ended up getting a job a David’s Bridal as a the service manager, and although I love fashion and found some interest in bridal design I quickly realized that selling dresses was not my passion or calling in life. After that I realized I wanted to be my own boss. My family has a talent in baking I ended up starting a small food truck bakery with them. After starting that business I got engaged and then married to my wonderful husband, Chris! I loved the planning process and after we got married I was actually sad that planning part of the event had ended. Shortly after that I saw a job ad for an assistant wedding planner and I reached out and got the job. I assisted on several weddings the year after our wedding and realized it was something I was not only good at but thoroughly enjoyed. So shortly after my 1 year wedding anniversary I started Moody Blue Events. I jumped in head first. I have since left my family business to pursue wedding planning full time. Moody Blue events offers day of coordination services, partial and full planning for Colorado weddings! I love being the guide for my couples navigating the crazy wedding world for the first time. I love the entire planning process and thrive when I get to put my design skills to work! Creating unique events for one of a kind humans is my jam :)
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Last year I actually worked with a business coach to help me figure out how to book more of my dream/ideal client. Part of her system was reading the book, Building a Story Brand, by Donald Miller. It’s a customer centric philosophy about making your clients the hero of your business while you are the guide. And it just made everything click for me. As consumers we really only care about what we get out of something. So using that thought process you should focus on what the client will get out your services over what you have to offer. After reading and buying into this brand strategy I started booking more clients and since then have reshaped what my ideal client looks like. I’ve realized it’s an always evolving thing as I grow and change through being a business owner as well!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I feel like for many people school feels like the obvious answer to find what you want to be when you grow up. That was a very tough pill for me to swallow. I already knew before I graduated from high school that I didn’t want to go to college. I just didn’t enjoy school and couldn’t wait to be done with it. At the time I didn’t realize I was a creative though. After a couple years of working as a receptionist for a flood research company I thought well the only way to move up in a career is to get a degree. So, I caved and went to college. But I still struggled with it and found myself doing it to please the people around me at that time and not because I actually wanted to get a degree. After working my way up the retail management ladder, I came to realization that I couldn’t drink that Kool-Aid so to speak and left to start my family business. I loved the branding aspect and getting to create something from scratch. And it wasn’t till after designing my own wedding that I finally realized I was a creative and what my soul had been searching for had been found. It only took my till my early 30’s to figure this out so I have spend the last 5 years diving into this wedding planning world. I love what I do now and find true joy in helping couples in love.
