Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amber Chapplain. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
The first thing that comes to my mind is that I would have taken my business more seriously, much sooner than I did. While I already had a successful career in sales, it was a different thing entirely for me to be marketing myself, as opposed to someone else’s product. I struggled with imposter syndrome and anxiety around my worth to clients. Because of this, I can see now that it held me back in my creative communication, practice and decisiveness. I was scared shitless every time I showed up for a consultation. I didn’t keep proper track of my income and expenses, because it actually terrified me to see profit, as it represented worth and responsibility. I basically treated my business like a side project, and that was how I showed up to it. I grossly undercharged for my services at the beginning, shaming myself into thinking that no one would want to pay the proper rate. I almost cringe now when I think of the money I left on the table, (but I don’t because I learned a lesson). It took over a year of running my business full time for me to realize I was absolutely worth it.
If I had taken charge of my worth and pushed myself to treat my business as something worth showing up for, instead of giving in to worry and anxiety, I could have saved myself a lot of mental grief, lost money, and wasted time and creativity (and those last two things ARE money). Save the self criticism, and take yourself and your business beautifully seriously. That is what will sell. That is what you deserve.

Amber, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I currently offer Astrology and Tarot readings, Astrology Courses, Coaching, and host The Pisces Perspective Podcast.
It my intention is to bring you a better understanding of yourself through the ancient tool of astrology, and the sacred tool of Tarot. Helping people to feel seen, understood and empowered is my core mission. There is a part of me that exists to be of service (Pisces Sun). this is my motivation as I commit to each and every reading I get to perform, and every service I offer.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being transparent. When I’ve been struggling or have had a lot going on personally, I don’t hide it from my clients or followers.
Why? Because I want to build trust.
I’m not saying that I share very little detail, because I treasure my privacy, but I will communicate enough for understanding. Inauthenticity is something that I can sniff out quickly in others, and so I don’t see the point of wasting time engaging in it myself. And honestly, it’s boring to have to “keep up”. Sometimes I just can’t, and I say so. I think this had created a stable level of trust between my followers/clients and myself.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Client references and collaborations with other peers in the industry. Always.
