We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amber , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved hair, I loved beauty. My mom used to let my sister and I play with her hair, and clothes. I loved it! I just felt drawn to beauty and love seeing people well put together, it just makes me happy! As I got older, I started playing in my own hair and trying different things, went to college and decided that it wasn’t for me so I dropped out, went to cosmetology school and didn’t look back. I’ve been doing it ever since. I can look at someone’s hair and tell them this is what I think would work for you, and be able to pull it off. I feel that God has gifted me in that way and I love it, it’s a good feeling to have. That’s why my business was started. Not only do I want people to look their very best but also feel their very best. A nice hairstyle goes a very long way!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those of you who do not know me, and have never read about me, I am a believer, business owner of several businesses, minister of the Word, author, actress, and a newlywed! I mean I wear so many different hats it’s crazy but I love it all at the same time! My stepping out into business was definitely an act of faith. It is not easy to be an entrepreneur and I think I’ve stated that before. It takes for you to have some type of faith in something that everything will be alright even when it’s hard to see. There has to be some type of anchor holding you when life gets rough and it’s my faith for me. I provide so many different services from natural hair to wigs to, braids, to updos, etc. I will do it all! What I think sets me apart from others in this business is humility and an excellent spirit. No I am not perfect or bragging but when I do something I love I do it as unto the Lord with the spirit of excellence.l and I think that’s why matters, putting your all into it. That’s why an excellent spirit does. I am most proud of how far I have come as an individual. The spiritual growth, the mental maturity, the lessons I have learned and the risks I’ve taken, it makes me proud as a person because I couldn’t do it without the Lord but I trust him to take me where I need to be. So I’m proud! I want potential clients, friends, fans, followers, anyone that is just leisurely reading this to know that you can do it, whatever endeavor you have, whatever dream you have you can do it, just keep the faith and it will be alright!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What I think helped me build my reputation in the hair and beauty market is setting the bar for myself, giving myself standards to go by such as benign time for my clients, providing the best service possible along with the best customer service. When we go into business we have to set standards for ourselves in order to provide the best service possible and stand out from other competitors. It is so important.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Market, market, market! I used social media to market my business by putting together or thinking of different ideas such as buy one get one free, or get a hair product for 20% off with the purchase of a service. I would say market as much as possible because that is what is going to draw people in. I spent money on advertisements on instagram, Facebook is good to use as well. I’ve seen people use Tik Tok as a way of advertising as well as Youtube. There are so many ways to advertise and build your audience. Just be creative and think outside the box as much as possible.
