We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amber Beck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amber below.
Amber, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
When I was 25 years old, my doctor gave me a prescription for blood pressure medication. I asked how long I would have to take the medication and she (very matter-of-factly) responded: “More than likely for the rest of your life.” I was shocked, but I believed her. I later decided that was not going to be my story. I didn’t know anything about health and wellness, so I started cutting back on salt and sodas and thought I was doing something right.
It wasn’t until a coworker took a photo of me that I didn’t want anyone to see that my life changed. It was only a few months before my friend’s wedding (where I was supposed to wear a white mermaid gown) and I did not recognize myself. That’s when I knew I had to change something. I made up my mind that I was going to change my lifestyle. It was that simple. I always tell my clients that “there is nothing more powerful than a made-up mind” because I know. The day I made up my mind that I was going to work on building a body that I loved and treat myself like someone I loved, everything changed. I got a new doctor, got some bloodwork done, and changed my habits.
I later went to school to get my Health and Wellness Coach certification and the rest is history. My life changed in so many positive ways because of that one decision. It lead me to better health, more professional opportunities, and more confidence in myself and my decision-making. The trickle-down effect was just amazing!
I have been off of blood pressure medication for four years. I also have a thriving business empowering women to recover from yo-yo dieting & overcome mental barriers to fall in love with themselves.
There is NOTHING more powerful than a made-up mind.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a certified health and wellness coach. I started my business by “accident.” I lost a good bit of weight in 2018 in preparation for my best friend’s wedding. A few people started asking me how I did it, so I started a group chat and used it to help a few friends. I would have them send me their meals. I would send them healthy recipes, check in with everyone and keep them accountable with their eating habits. I wanted to invest in them and help them invest in themselves, so I started weigh-ins and workout challenges to keep everyone motivated and on track. I turned it into a business after I realized how much money I was investing while trying to make the program unique and valuable. I wrote down all the ways I wanted to help women, and I created a program. I wanted to really put my all into the program, so I went back to school and got certified as a health and wellness coach through Emory University.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growth has been to nurture the clients that I have. I make sure that my program is unique and my members feel an intimate relationship with me. Weight loss is a vulnerable field, so I make sure I make my business a safe space for them to fail and win in. Word of mouth has been my biggest marketing tool.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn being “stuck”. I very rarely take “no” for an answer, and I don’t let anyone tell me what I “can’t” do. Had I listened to the first doctor that told me that I would have to take blood pressure medication for the rest of my life, I would still be taking blood pressure medication. I wouldn’t have changed my life, I wouldn’t have the confidence that I have and I wouldn’t have my business.
