We recently connected with Amber Aisha and have shared our conversation below.
Amber, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
Confidence. It really goes a long way in this industry. Most times I wanted my work to be approved by others even when i already thought it was great. Looking back it was the times I had more confidence that people wanted to invest in me. If I could go back in time I would stand on my work more, I wouldn’t be so shy in rooms and in my head. I would most importantly sell myself more. I was so sensitive about my art I lost opportunities by just not speaking up. Confidence sells
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started having a passion for photography when I was young around 8th grade so 2008 for me. My dad was the father that always snapped candies and had his vhs in hand. I grew this love to capture moments in time and to document my people (family and community) in a better light than I felt the media would. From then I went on to Study Photography and Visual Communications in school and earned a Degree in Fine Art. I stayed in LA and have been blessed to shoot major campaigns and work/tour with artist. I still create on my own personal time and still document my people/my community and share stories through photos
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Your friends aren’t your target audience. For me most of my friends are artist as well and I had to learn that when I released products and or prints the people who are actually supporting are typically people I don’t even know. So instead of targeting to the people around me I had to pivot and go where I’m appreciated and not where I’m blending in.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I don’t have a huge following but I grew mine from being consistent and genuine
