We recently connected with Amatus-sami Karim and have shared our conversation below.
Amatus-sami, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a creative for a few decades and now in the aftermath of Covid and the writer’s strike, I am embarking on a new 501C3 endeavor that really excites me. I feel like I have been “quiet” for a few years juggling life. SO many shifts and changes have made adulting challenging leaving me feeling isolated for various reasons. I know I’m not alone. I decided to get active and pour into some of the reasons why I have originally been inspired to make art. Women’s rights encompasses a wide umbrella of issues that require continuity and to be championed like so many societal challenges. Thefauxfree.com is a company I created for artwork and free speech. Right now there are a series of T-shirts that express some of the sentiments that we sometimes feel and think but don’t always say. Currently you can buy them online, in certain stores and other outlets, and the proceeds support the opportunity for young girls to get the access and resources they choose on their reproductive freedom journey. This is a creative outcry that I have been bottling up for years and I’m so happy that I don’t feel alone in the sentiment.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being an artist is the ultimate leap of faith. It’s a contract with your inner faculties and abilities to live in the unknown.
The amount of skills, shifts and changes it takes to find peace in that walk is warrior work.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In Europe artists receive subsidies from their governments. I have always marveled at that when thinking about a living wage, building community, and having an infrastructure amongst artists here in the states.
