We recently connected with Ama’ray Frazier and have shared our conversation below.
Ama’ray , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The very first time I knew I wanted to pursue a professional career in the arts was when I was a sophomore in high school. Going into my sophomore year, I had the intent of being a YouTuber and wanted to create funny skits with my friends and family but never got around to doing any and throughout that year, I sat on myself and contemplated wether or not it was possible due to my lack of knowledge and experience and instead of starting right then and there, I took the time to research and learn what needed to be in order for me to be confident in my work and brand. Experiencing the ups and downs of high school led me straight into the direction that God paved for me and I will forever be grateful for it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ama’ray Frazier and I also go by Ray which has become very common for me ever since I told people to start calling me that back in high school. Originally, I’m from Lafayette Louisiana and moved to Houston Texas in 2015 with my family and where I have lived ever since. My parents wanted a better life for me and my brother and I’m thankful they did because moving to Texas was a blessing that allowed us to advance quicker and safer than most and I used this to my advantage by always trying to do my best in everything that I was apart of because I knew if I kept up the good work and tried my hardest to grow then I would get further and be happy in my life. After having some ups and downs with fitting in to a new school and crowd that I was unfamiliar with, I found peace at an early age after learning how to better my relationship with myself, family and God and when doing so, I began to find success in the things that I was doing in my life at the time and this made me realize that keeping up the momentum wasn’t going to be easy but definitely going to be worth it and I began to live like this day by day, even when a storm brewed up in my life, I kept going. After my high school phase, I pursued a degree in Filmmaking at Houston Community College in the fall of 2022 and this was the best decision I could have ever made for myself at the time because going to a smaller college helped to ease the load of a new chapter for me and there I made so many great connections and built amazing confidence and leadership skills that I still carry today. I learned the basics of filmmaking and after only being around it for a small amount of time, I quickly learned and was able to generate my own style and vibe with the craft and this helped me to move forward with creating my own stories, films and music, allowing me to build my own world and universe within the world we already live in. I believe in enjoying the journey and trusting the process and if we all look at life this way then we wouldn’t feel that life is hard or unfair but we would understand how and why God puts us in positions of hardships and what we can become out of them. Hardships makes us stronger and being patient is what allows bigger and better things of quality to be open to us and our lives and I live by this everyday. This mindset allows me to write better, create more efficiently, envision at a stronger level, network at a higher rate and feel good about myself and the life that I am living and still building today. My brand is to do the things you love while making money doing so in order to keep doing those things and when you find your passion and decide to stick with it, no matter how long it takes for you to reach your goals, you will be successful. I feel like I stand out because I know exactly what I want from life and I’m always willing to grow into a better version of myself to achieve it. I’m mostly proud of my journey and how far I’ve come in life and my career because seeing how things change overtime and me being able to quickly adapt to it is a really big thing for filmmakers, actors, musicians and artists. I want to give hope and joy to people all around the world, no matter the age, race or background, but to show them that we were made to succeed on this earth and that’s the reason we were put here in the first place, not to just struggle but to also win and how beautiful life can be when you embrace who you are and live for what you are meant to do. My goal is to live creatively free throughout my life and create all different types of ideas from movies to music to fashion to art and so much more, while traveling the world and reaching so many different peoples hearts, minds and souls and that’s something that I will and must do. I want people to know that I am real and not somebody who just wants to profit off of pretending to be relatable just to make people like them, but I genuinely love community and having the right people around to live and grow together is a big part of who I am and my life.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to create stories that define who we are as a society and an ecosystem, creating stories that tell about the good and sometimes the scary and how we are all connected in some way, shape or form, no matter how we look, sound or where we come from. This is something that represents my music, movies and style and will forever be apart of me.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My first time ever directing a project was a class assignment that was assigned to everyone in my directing class and me and my classmates had 2 weeks to come up with an idea and film it as individual directors. This process was stressful mainly because it was my first time being put into a position where I had to step up and show people what I can do and when doing so, the process was long and tiresome but fun at the end of the day. I submitted my project to the Houston Community College student film showcase and was super nervous about people’s opinions on me and my work. After a long nerve racking and sweaty few minutes, two projects of mine played, one with me acting and another with me directing and the theater went wild for my performance and directing, praising me for my style and ability to give an amazing performance and lead a team under pressure. This created my confidence as an artist and keeps me on track to keep going and that moment was God telling me to keep going because my way has already been paved.
