We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Wan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner at the age of 25 has been the most fulfilling venture I’ve ever been on. Fresh out of University I quit my part time job and jumped into my business full time and personally, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done – that being said there of course were some struggles.
Financial security has been the biggest curve and hump to get over. Realizing, you are the only one who has to hustle and pitch, to be able to get paid and secure monthly income can be stressful and daunting, sometimes you think it would be easier getting a “regular” job. But at the end of the day, my mental health and purpose feels so much better doing this for myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Amanda, I’m 25 and i’m a full time social media agency owner and content creator. I graduated from Concordia University with a degree in Communications. I’ve been creating content for my own platforms for 10+ years and opened up my own agency almost 2 years ago, that has a focus on video editing, podcast editing and social media management. I also sell digital products within my agency.
I’m proud of myself for not going the traditional route that everyone told me I should, corporate life was and is not for me, and that’s okay. I’m thankful I knew this from the get go so I didn’t throw myself into something I wouldn’t like.
Working in social media while also creating content for myself can be stressful but also so motivating. It’s hard to always be “on” but I would not trade this career journey for anything.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve built my audience by staying true to myself and being fully authentic, open and vulnerable within my own content. I believe interacting with your audience and making them feel a “personal” connection to you can help with audience building and sustainability.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth has been the biggest factor in gaining clients, which I am so so thankful for. I’ve surrounded myself with such amazing friends, clients and fellow business owners that we are all always bouncing clients off each other.
