We were lucky to catch up with Amanda Stevens & Jodi Trevino recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda and Jodi, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
As full time working therapists, wives and moms for many years the day to day physical and emotional demands lead us to a conversation about “what else is possible?” We are people oriented and knew that we had a skill set to build a community and what better way than a good cup of coffee and creating a memorable experience. Once our business plan was established it manifested quickly at a rate we couldn’t believe was possible. For 2 solid years we showed up for both our coffee and therapy communities as well as all the responsibilities that come with having a family. At the 2 year mark we had many hard and hopeful conversations about putting all of our energy into our coffee business leaving more time for our family and building our coffee community. So… we took a huge leap of faith and stepped away from our therapy world and have never looked back!!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As co-owners of Grounded Mobile Coffee we both have a vision for Kansas City for each recipient to walk away with a beverage, a moment of reflection, a smile and once in a while even a tear. Our vision and mission has always been for people to remember that brief encounter we’ve had with them at their event while walking away with a handcrafted beverage. Every beverage is served with what we like to call an “ohmment” which are randomly selected messages pulled by each customer which at times can even change the course of their day. We offer a full service catered beverage bar experience which includes, espresso drinks, cold brew. iced coffee, drip coffee, homemade hot chocolate, homemade chai, smoothies blended coffee, and artisan lemonades all while meeting dietary and Kosher needs.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
While creating our business plan we initially immersed ourselves into the possibility of embarking on ownership of a food/coffee truck. We quickly discovered how welcoming the KC food truck community is but despite all the information we gathered including meeting with food truck owners, outfitters and panels we decided that a coffee catering experience best suited our vision with greater versatility to serve within communities that were unable to step outside in order to participate in an event.

How’d you meet your business partner?
We met 16 years ago while both working as therapists in a sub- acute rehab setting. We quickly became inseparable both at work and in life and once you find that person you know that there is more to discover on this journey. Upon working together we soon discovered that we had a mutual respect for each others work ethic while at the same time had the ability to bring fun into the workplace. There is not an event that goes by that we don’t have a good laugh and walk away saying “that was such a great event.”
