Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda Spence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amanda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I owned a non-toxic house cleaning company 10 years ago. It was successful. I had two employees and it was growing. One day I was given an opportunity to win a scholarship to massage therapy school. In all honesty, I didn’t know if I would even like it, but I thought I’d love to do something other than cleaning. I entered my essay on a Thursday and received a call on Friday that I was accepted and school started that very Monday. Over the weekend, I had to close my business and figure out a way to get through school. I finished school and found that I love helping people feel better by the simple power of touch. This was the gateway to my holistic journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Many of my massage clients have reached out to me looking for complimentary therapies that assist massage, such as acupuncture and homeopathy. I always try to help, but was finding it hard to get ahold of several of these services. I also found that when I did find another service the providers were having a hard time keeping their books full. There was this great divide and I wanted to bridge that gap, so I created an online holistic directory, making it easy to find trusted service providers. The website shares blogs and we send out monthly newsletters to educate. Majority of our providers seek out the root cause and facilitate healing from there. We want to help people understand they have the power to heal instead of taking medications to mask issues.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My 16 year old son began having excruciating migraines. We went to his primary care physician three times before we decided he needed another opinion. We were referred to a neurologist who told us he has anxiety and depression. The doctor wrote up two prescriptions without much of an intake. It hit me the following day that I should take him to our chiropractor. She did a very detailed intake and decided he needed an X-ray. I was astonished to see the curvature of his vertebrae. He had scoliosis and there were no medicines that could improve the issue. We trashed his scripts and began seeing the Chiro regularly. He felt much better after a couple weeks of therapy. This wasn’t the first time his chiropractor saved us, though it is one of the moments in my life that I realized there are better ways to care for ourselves than Western medicine.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
When you create something that is needed, people will find it. I attend a lot of networking events, and I also hold them. I’ve created a community for holistic providers to come together. The cool thing is every time we get a new provider they share us in return with their community. It takes time, but word of mouth is a wonderful marketing tool.
