We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Schonberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
One of the ways I try to serve the underserved in our community is by focusing on the importance and benefits of operating a home based business. A lot of marketing information from bigger corporations and services is usually aimed at helping brick and mortars. While I support both there are so many tax advantages and benefits to working from home.
One of the things I try to do with my content is to encourage those in my industry that working from home doesn;t have to be a stepping stone.
You can generate a great income, effectively market and keep up with other competitor companies in your community and still make a name for yourself all while being a home baker.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Amanda Schonberg. I am a bakery business coach and the founder of Baking For Business. I’m a certified chef and lover of all things sweet. As a hobby I use to log onto Periscope, an older live streaming app and connect with other bakers in the industry .Eventually after watching others another instructor recommended I go live and share my own tips.
What started out as wanting to help other bakers succeed turned into a whole lot more. I now offer recipes, tips, courses and resources aimed at helping home bakers build their business. Baking For Business has a product line of marketing tee’s, a podcast and a blog with free tips and resources for those getting started.
I truly believe we would never have been given a gift if we couldn’t profit and prosper from it.
Within the online platform I offer a group coaching membership, The Entrepreneur Community- for those who want ongoing support with building their business. We have a over 200 bakers in 9 countries. Through continuing education and personal development it is my goal to help as many home bakers as I can generate more sales and build a thriving home bakery in their communities
Serving others in the cottage food industry is my joy. My greatest achievement is my students. I have been blessed to watch them leave their jobs, increase their income, have 1k days, receive press and more from the trainings I provide. Taking all the lessons I have learned from my background in food service management has allowed me to show up and help others to work smarter and not harder in their businesses.
I am passionate about people being able to have success from the things that make them truly happy.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started my business I did so with a business partner. While it was a great journey and learning period, looking back it wasn’t the best move. After building my first membership program I walked away from a nearly 5 year partnership and let that person have it. I don’t have any regrets because I believe life is a series of tests. That experience allowed me to have a testimony. I now make more money on my own than I ever did with my partner in all those years combined. I have joy now when I work in my business and I am able to do the things that light me up. I wish that person well however when I left it did feel weird at first.
When you are use to having someone in this industry to talk to at times entrepreneurship can seem lonely when making tough decisions on your own. So I got a new business partner, Jesus. I pray, talk and lean on him for growth and understanding. I operate now with a growth mindset and a spirit of discernment because I now realize I am the child of a king. I no longer play small or care about others opinions. I go for every opportunity that comes my way because I know that abundance is my birthright.
I show up with a willingness to serve my students in the best way possible and rely on my faith in him to be the only partnership I need. So many more doors have opened for me then I ever dreamed. It feels wonderful knowing that someone real has my back. He hasn’t failed me yet.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I believe we should all serve before we sell. When I first started I would go live on social media every Sunday on Periscope. Eventually ,I started using Instagram which is now my platform of choice. Every week I provide a new tip or piece of content. I love sharing what is current or helpful for my students.
I have a podcast which is titled Baking For Business Podcast, which debuts a new episode every Wednesday. I try to not make any of my platforms about me but believe in sharing the stories and highlights of others so that we can grow as a community.
For anyone just started I would advise them to go live weekly. Have courage in showing up and sharing what makes you different. People can always try to steal your sauce but they can never take your flavor.
Your life trials are all lessons that can be shared with others.
Your personal brand is one of the strongest elements that will separate you from the crowd. Show up in the realest way possible and be unapologetic about it.
