Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda Richardson . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amanda , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Sometimes when I reflect, if I would’ve known that there are other routes you can take to be successful other than college or a 9-5, i wouldve explored this avenue much sooner than 25. I don’t regret my journey at all but knowing is half the battle.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a cosmetologist, I pour myself out behind the chair. Having invested in my craft, having those who have invested in me along the way as well isn’t something I take lightly. If you would’ve asked me when I first started cutting hair where it would take me, I wouldn’t have had a response for you. God alone has led me where I am. He allowed for me to hone a skill set that I didn’t know I possessed until I looked to Him first. From there, I’ve just grown and continue to grow in this industry. I’m most humbled by those that choose me. This business is about the people. The moment you forget you are of service to others, just hang it up. The most rewarding part about what we do is actually a small factor but plays a big part. We’re invested in our clients lives. We prepare them for that job interview or that date. For their weddings, funerals and everything in between. Our fingerprint is left where nobody else’s is. That’s my favorite part about what I’m allowed to do each day.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Self discipline plays a huge role in being your own boss. You hear people say all the time “you can do whatever you want. You make your own schedule” and although that’s true, there’s a flip side to it. You do get to make your own schedule but you have to build too. You work up to having that luxury but in the beginning, you’re staying late, coming in early, skipping lunch. etc just to attain and maintain. You truly cannot skip the grind. Years in and some days you’re still coming early & staying late. Everyone wants to be that booked and busy barber or stylist but the key is when you do achieve that goal, how do you keep it? Self discipline. More people should know how much of that it takes of you.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Education is definitely what keeps my foot on the gas. To teach someone what I’ve learned and share that. To put someone in position to make a way for themselves is the highest honor and one of the best things you can do for someone. To spark creativity and watch it commence is what drives me to stay motivated and driven as well as educated myself. I will never stop taking classes. Even if I’ve seen the technique a million times, there’s always something else you don’t know.
