We recently connected with Amanda Plavan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amanda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
My goal when my clients visit my private tattoo suite, beyond creating a piece of artwork that they with cherish forever, is making sure they each feel safe, comfortable, and heard.
Tattooing is teamwork, and open communication is essential for collaboration.
Creating an energetic environment that is calm, positive, and welcoming encourages my clients to feel comfortable and able to express themselves.
Tattooing requires trust and vulnerability and I take this responsibility very seriously. I respect the Art of tattooing, am honored to create each tattoo, and I respect my clients and myself.
My clients feedback is highly reassuring that I am indeed creating an environment that is comfortable and uplifting.
I am so very grateful for the opportunity I have to create a safe and inclusive space!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had a deep love for art and studied fine art at the Cleveland Institue of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I entered the tattoo industry over 18 years ago after securing my apprenticeship in Cleveland. Seeing a need for a calmer, safe, inclusive environment I opened my business, Sugar & Spice Tattoo a year and a half ago. Located at E. 12th and Euclid in the heart of Playhouse Square, my private tattoo suite offers a welcoming and relaxed environment. Communication and my clients comfort are my top priorities, always!
I love the work I do and I love my clients! I’m honored to be chosen to create artistic visions that last forever, and pour lots of love and intention in each piece I create.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I email and text my clients prior to and after their appointments.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being the only female in an all male shop required much resilience.
