We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Marie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
What I don’t think people realize when they see social media personalities/creators is their online persona is a character. It’s a role. Think of Chappell Roan the singer versus Kayleigh Amstutz the woman. When she is on stage and performing, she is working and playing as the character “Chappell Roan.” That is the same thing with full time content creators.
So when you throw audio erotica voice actor in the mix, the line between fantasy and reality becomes even more blurred. With my work being sensitive in nature, I connect with a personal and intimate side of the listener. That lends to a unique relationship where they get to share something with me that I am unable to equally reciprocate. So then when a listener then interacts with my online persona (which, to be clear, is still me! But it is a version of me that has to remain professional at all times), they will inevitably have a harder time differentiating between Amanda the VA and Amanda the person behind the accounts.
On the other hand, people will meet me in real life- such as in the context of online dating (a struggle in itself) and frequently interpret my online presence as the only side of me that exists. My social media accounts are my job. You don’t go to a restaurant and meet a server and assume that’s how they act outside of work. But when non-creators see a creator account, they aren’t able to separate that from the person in real life.
This has been such an unexpected challenge with growing my accounts and growing as an audio erotica VA and I’m still not even sure how to do it! In the end, I try to be as authentic as I can online while remaining professional, and enforcing boundaries with how I navigate the online world and real life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Amanda and I am a content creator and a voice actor who makes audio erotica for women.
I started on TikTok in 2020 for fun while I was in nursing school. I continued making content while also pursuing my nursing career, never thinking the content creation would ever turn into anything other than something fun I do when not working 12 hour night shifts. Then in 2023, I was first reached out to by Dipsea and the Quinn a few months later to start creating spicy audios for a primarily queer female audience. I had received compliments on my voice in the comments of my TikToks but never thought anything of it. But when offered these opportunities, I didn’t hesitate for a second. My background prior to nursing was in gender and s*xuality studies and then my focus in nursing was in women’s reproductive health, incorporating non-violent communication and trauma informed care. So to me, audio erotica was a perfect and beautiful culmination of all of my passions- I could create spicy audios that would also serve as educational, healing, and safe tools for people to explore their s*xualities and relationship with intimacy. So on the surface, you may just hear me whisper spicy things in your ear for a specific, intended end result. But on a much deeper level, I encourage listeners to reflect on their experiences (both solo and with others) and how those could be improved with communication and confidence in themselves.
There is no “right way” to make audio erotica, but my approach works for me and gives the work I do meaning. To me, it is as meaningful as the work I did assisting mothers in labor or caring for critical patients in the ICU. I want people to listen to my audios and go, “wow. I didn’t know s*x could be like this. I didn’t know pleasure could feel this way. I didn’t know my understanding of intimacy was missing my own experience.” I want to navigate all types of situations in my audios so the listener can take that and feel empowered in their real life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of the work I do is hearing the impact it has on people. When people DM/comment/message me and tell me they feel more confident in themselves after watching my videos, or have reconnected with aspects of intimacy after listening to my audios, it makes me beyond proud of what I do. I think it’s easy to get lost in the work and the challenges of being a creator, but I love the reminders that it’s all for a reason. I approach all of the things I make with authenticity and care and love, and I want that to come through.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Starting on social media was something I was doing just for fun. I liked making my silly little videos (as I still call them) and seeing how they resonated with people. But I think my approach of just being “me” online during a time when we were all looking for an escape from reality was something people enjoyed. There are so many ways to start on social media that result in growing an audience (whether that’s the goal or not), and I just happened to fall into it.
With that being said, I have known and worked with A LOT of creators now, and have learned a lot in the nearly 5 years I’ve been doing this, and I have A LOT of thoughts on what works and what doesn’t. The main thing is authenticity and not caring about being “cringe.” If what is holding you back from creating is the fear of embarrassment or being “bad” then you will never get started. Just as anything else you do, you have to start somewhere and you’re not going to be the best at what you do on day one. So going into content creation (or anything new) with curiosity, an open mind, and a willing to learn is the best thing you can do for yourself.
