Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda Maday. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amanda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
In the world of architecture & design with a hospitality focus, we’re seeing a strong shift toward immersive, experience-driven spaces that blend luxury with sustainability. Biophilic design elements—natural materials, greenery, and ample natural light—are taking center stage, creating environments that promote well-being and connection. Additionally, flexible, multi-use spaces are becoming essential, allowing hotels and restaurants to adapt to changing guest needs. Technology integration, from smart lighting to contactless check-ins, is also shaping the guest experience, offering convenience without compromising aesthetics. The focus is on crafting spaces that feel both inviting and innovative, seamlessly merging function with beauty.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m the owner of a women-owned and operated architecture and interior design firm based in Minneapolis. I’m fascinated by how design shapes the way we experience the world—how a well-designed space can evoke emotion, foster connection, and enhance everyday life. That passion led me to start my own firm, Studio Grey, with a vision of delivering intentional designs that reflect the unique identities of the clients we serve.
For over a decade, Studio Grey has delivered customized, brand-specific designs for hospitality driven spaces. No rinse & repeat here. We work nationally for commercial sectors including lodging & hotels, multi-family, workplace, adaptive reuse, mixed-use, and restaurants, and are an approved designer through a variety of brand hotels.
We offer full architecture and interior design services, from concept development through construction documentation, as well as furniture design & procurement. We take pride in solving complex design challenges—whether it’s maximizing space efficiency or translating a brand’s identity into a physical environment.
An important aspect of Studio Grey is that we are truly a team-driven company. From day one, I made the decision not to use my personal name for the firm because I wanted to build something that represents the collective talent, creativity, and collaboration of our entire team. Design is never a solo effort, and we believe the best work happens when diverse perspectives come together.
What sets us apart is not only our design expertise but also our commitment to collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. As a women-owned and operated firm, we bring a unique perspective to the industry, emphasizing thoughtful storytelling, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of how spaces influence human experience. Our team is dedicated to developing environments that are not only aesthetically compelling but also meaningful, functional, and built to stand the test of time.
I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the relationships we’ve built along the way. Seeing our clients thrive in the spaces we’ve designed is the ultimate reward. I want potential clients to know that we approach every project with passion, creativity, and a commitment to excellence. Our work is about more than just design—it’s about telling stories through space and making a lasting connections.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe our reputation has been built on a foundation of strong relationships, thoughtful design, and a commitment to delivering exceptional work with integrity. From the beginning, we’ve focused on creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also deeply functional and meaningful for the people who use them. Clients recognize our ability to listen, interpret their needs, and translate their vision into spaces that truly work for them—whether it’s a hospitality venue that enhances guest experience, a workplace that fosters productivity, or a home that reflects personal identity.
Beyond design, what has really helped us stand out is our emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. By intentionally structuring our firm as a collective effort rather than an individual brand, we’ve built a culture that values diverse perspectives and creative problem-solving. This team-focused approach ensures that every project benefits from the combined expertise of our designers, architects, and partners, resulting in richer, more thoughtful outcomes.
Word-of-mouth and client referrals have also played a huge role in our growth. Our clients appreciate the level of care, detail, and professionalism we bring to each project, and their trust in us has led to lasting relationships and new opportunities. We’ve made a point to stay engaged in the Minneapolis design community, collaborating with other local creatives, attending industry events, and supporting women in architecture and design.
Ultimately, I think our reputation has grown because we stay true to our values—collaboration, creativity, and communication—while always pushing ourselves to innovate and evolve.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Managing a team and maintaining high morale starts with fostering a culture of collaboration, trust, and mutual respect. Great design is a team effort, and that philosophy extends to how we support and uplift one another in our work. I’ve always believed that when people feel valued and heard, they produce their best work—so I make it a priority to ensure every team member has a seat at the table.
I encourage open dialogue and transparency, whether it’s about project challenges, creative ideas, or professional growth. We have check-ins to ensure everyone is aligned and supported, and I make it a point to celebrate wins—both big and small—because acknowledging hard work goes a long way in building motivation and confidence.
Empowering the team is another important factor. I trust my team’s expertise and encourage them to take ownership of their work, make creative decisions, and grow in their roles. This not only strengthens our projects but also helps each person develop as a designer and leader.
For me, maintaining high morale means recognizing that work-life balance is essential. Our industry can be demanding, but I believe that great design comes from a place of inspiration, and that means ensuring our team has the space to recharge. We support flexibility when possible and promote a healthy, balanced approach to work.
