Hi Amanda , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I was thinking of a name, I knew I wanted a catchy name! A+Pup actually came to me pretty quickly! I wanted a name people would remember easily and obviously it had to be about dogs! The A+ part of my business name kind of has two meanings! My name starts with an A so I thought it would be cute to have it kind of mean Amanda plus pups, but also an A+ is the best grade you can get in school! So also it means your pup is going to look A+ when I’m done grooming it!

Amanda , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Amanda Kuhl and I have been grooming dogs for 12 years now! I started my grooming career at Petsmart and I was with PetSmart for 10 years. I knew I wanted to leave Petsmart and venture out on my own in January 2021, and started my own business! Opening a stationary salon, was financially not going to work for me, so I decided to try in-home grooming! And it has really taken off! People love the fact that I come to them, and I groom in their home! Most dogs are more comfortable within the comfort of their own home which allows them to be more relaxed and enjoy the grooming process much more than going into a salon. It truly is like a spa day for most dogs! My services include baths, haircuts, nail trimming, ear cleaning and teeth brushing! My goal for every dog I groom is to give them the best and most stress free grooming experience so they enjoy the process and can strut their stuff after! It’s always so cute when I get done grooming a dog and it just prances around to show off its new haircut!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my reputation is my quality of grooms and my love for my pet parents pets. I have always been proud of how my grooms turn out and if a dog is having a bad and is being a little more wiggly for me then usual I will let the pet parent know I don’t think it’s my best work and that if they see anything sticking out to just call me back to fix it! My job is to make the dogs feel good and comfortable but to also make the pet parents happy with how their pets look and feel! And I feel a lot of people can see I truly do care for their pets and want the best for them! And I make them look and feel good!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word-of-mouth. I have been very lucky to have some of the most amazing clients a woman could ado for and they all tell their friends, family, neighbors and acquaintances about me! I would say about 70% of my clients are referred clients and the rest are clients I have had for years when I was still at PetSmart! And I am so lucky and thankful that they continue to use me!
