We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Jagow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
The most important lesson I learned from a previous job was that I needed to be apart of an organization that prioritized their employees health and wellness. People were under constant stress in that environment and I wanted to find a job and company that valued me as a human and not just a number. Now at my current job I am able to help other companies make sure their employees are feeling prioritized. Also I am able to now indulge in my hobbies and am a Co-host on The Chat Podcast with my best friend.

Amanda , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It took me awhile to really find what I am good at. I knew I was good at listening, helping others, and for some reason people really looked up to me. Not in a conceited way, but I started to realize that after building trust with so many people, they actually listened to my advice.
Now when I came to that realization that is where I found where I could thrive when it came to business. Being an employee benefits consultant I get to listen and help solve companies problems. I get to build relationships and have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people.
When it comes to my podcast The Chat, it revolves around the same thing. We love giving our listeners advice. We overall want our listeners to feel like our friends. We are giving them recommendations on where to eat, what brands we like, routines, how to make friends as an adult, etc.
If I leave this world knowing that I helped a company with a problem or helped a listener pick a good restaurant, I will be happy.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The biggest thing that helped me build a reputation in my market is networking and consistency.
When I first started being an employee benefits consultant, I went to every networking event possible. There were weeks I would go to an event every night of the week to meet new people. It was pushing me out of my comfort zone, but it was absolutely necessary to building my reputation. After a year I felt like I had a sense of community.
When it comes to our podcast we posted to our networks we already had, but we have had to be very consistent with marketing and recording episodes.
Luckily in both avenues people can see the authenticity and can understand how much work I put into both work and my hobbies.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Previous to being in employee benefits, I was in recruiting. I ended up getting laid off twice in one year. That was the hardest year of my life. Somehow I picked myself up and was determined to stay living in San Diego. I was set on creating my dream life. I pushed through and ended up finding my dream job. I am still grateful for being laid off, because it brought me to where I am now.
