We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amanda Howard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amanda below.
Alright, Amanda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I’ve always loved makeup and skincare. It wasn’t until my father passed away I had the opportunity to go back to school. I have always had to work and couldn’t afford not to work to go to school. The course I wanted to take was a M-F 7:00 – 3:00 time frame and it took a year. I had made up my mind that I was going to do this. No matter the sacrifice I had to do it for me. So I signed up for college. Being the oldest student in my class I didn’t let that define anything. After graduating I got my license and found a beauty shop that had an open side. It’s attached to the building but it’s still separated. It takes alot of money to start up and it has taken several months only saving and buying a little here and a little there to finally have all the products and tools needed to run my spa. Before I went back to college I already had a tattoo license and I did permanent makeup. I still do and I love it Prior to permanent makeup I have done regular makeup for weddings, pageants, photography etc. I think the most challenging thing is having the funds upfront to get started. If I could do things differently I would have done it sooner. Working a job you love is not work. So I tell people I don’t work, I have fun!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am most proud of my dedication and determination. At almost 40 years old I didn’t give up on my dream. It took me a lot longer than I ever expected but I still made a way. I say if there is a will there is a way. No matter the obstacles you’re facing. What sets me apart is every single person that walks through my door I treat them the same. I want them to have the best experience at my shop. Every single time not just a few in between appointments. Every appointment I want them to think in their mind this is the best service I’ve even had. I am a result driver person and I only use products that yield visible results. Being a business owner not only means you are there physically you have to be there for other roles as well like, social media manager, website manager, inventory manager the list goes on and on. Unless you have someone to do this for you it’s not going to happen. So remember to set time aside each week to focus on the other important business roles you play in your business

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Getting in with a beauty shop and word of mouth has been helpful for growing my clientele. Yes social media has helped too but you have to be posting several times a day to keep up with the algorithm. I will say what I have noticed is older women have more money and are caring more about their skin. They have been my best clients for both permanent makeup and aesthetics. They can’t see to draw in their eyebrows or eyeliner so they come to me to get it tattooed. Some have wrinkles and sun damage and want to start taking care of their skin. Once I’ve done a facial on one they go tell their friends and word of mouth will get another client in my door.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Having a support system is huge. Knowing people have your back for days when you don’t want to continue or think you may not be making the right decisions. I’m a Christian and I pray a lot. It’s helped me for sure
