We were lucky to catch up with Amanda Horn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When you’ve been a professional in an industry for long enough, you’ll experience moments when the entire field takes a U-Turn, an instance where the consensus completely flips upside down or where the “best practices” completely change. If you’ve experienced such a U-Turn over the course of your professional career, we’d love to hear about it.
I think this is the entire basis of functional and integrative medicine! I discovered the concepts of functional and integrative medicine when I realized the limitations of conventional medicine in managing common, but complex women’s health issues. In navigating several years of unexplained infertility, I found answers using this approach, and knew that I would one day pay it forward by serving women in the same capacity. Women (and men!) are becoming stronger advocates for their healthcare- unfortunately, often after several experiences that left them feeling doubtful of their experiences. I aim to provide validating, empowering, redemptive healthcare to Tennessee women. My mission is quite literally driven by the women making U-turns in their healthcare journey.
Amanda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the one-woman show at Knoxville Integrative Women’s Health. This practice has been in the works for several years, and I am so fortunate to be in a place to see it to fruition! After a lengthy journey of infertility, pregnancy loss, and complicated endocrine and metabolic dysfunction, I found a provider who used a functional approach, and my life was changed. You will often hear me say ‘ I am providing the kind of care I wish I had access to, back then,’ and that’s the truth! I am excited to offer a root-cause approach to healing women. I want women to achieve a state of true wellness, and experience the transformative power that is the marriage of contemporary and traditional therapies. I am poised in this beautiful spot where I can utilize common medications, traditional herbal therapies, and novel treatment options to achieve radical wellness in women throughout their lifespan. I specialize in functional fertility, hormone health, metabolic health and postpartum mental health. At KIWH, expect long appointments where we really have the time to hash out how you feel, and how you got here. Expect to be in charge of your care. Expect a plan of care that leaves you feeling empowered.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
AUTHENTICITY. What you see is what you get, and I think my patients will agree. People can tell when you care, and when you are feigning compassion. I am not in the business of pretending- I really think that the way to achieve systemic change is through a major shift towards health promotion, and that shows up in how I communicate with my clients. The relationships I have with my clients speak for themselves.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Frankly- word of mouth. I am sort of wedged between offering healthcare and being a service-based business. But when it comes to the intimate nature of women’s health, and the open honesty required to achieve success, nothing sells my services quite like clients who are invested and engaged in their plan of care. I am also pretty active in offering education on my social media accounts, which is fun, but also helps me continue to engage with potential clients.
