We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amanda Harper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amanda below.
Amanda, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Ear Kit: interchangeable earrings for unbridled self expression. Fashion is fun. We get to go into our closets and choose how we want to show up in the world. For so many of us, the clothing we wear is a type of armor and comfort and integral to our self expression. I wanted to give people that opportunity in their jewelry box as well. All Ear Kit pieces are removable and interchangeable with all the other pieces- so you can create a look that is unique to you.
Amanda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started making jewelry at a tiny desk in the corner of my childhood bedroom after college when the job market wasn’t behaving too kindly to me. I had always dreamed of pursuing a fashion career and jewelry making became the creative outlet I needed. When people started asking more about the jewelry I was wearing than the clothes I was trying to sell at my retail job, I thought that maybe it would be possible to give myself my dream job. Now a decade later, many things have shifted and evolved- but jewelry and creation remain at our core.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Like many businesses, the covid pandemic had a dramatic impact on what I wanted to create and put into the world. When lockdowns were starting to lift, and we became more comfortable with exploring again- I had the greatest urge to play, experiment, dress up and have fun with my personal style again. I had always liked adding versatile elements into my jewelry designs, but I became obsessed with the idea of giving people endless versatile options to express themselves. Voila – Ear Kit was born.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that your competition is your enemy. Everything teaches us this- media, sports, movies and many of the most inspiring entrepreneurial stories. But I have learned that you get so much farther by cheering each other on, and if you innovate and make a good product- there is room at the table for all of us.
