We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Amanda` Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Amanda` below.
Amanda`, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
I often wonder how different my career as an engineer might have been if I had discovered this industry sector earlier. Most live sound engineers typically start in a shop or production house before moving on to touring or mixing in local venues, but my path was different. While I gained experience working in smaller venues around Atlanta, much of my learning came from on-the-job training through trial and error. I realize now that having a mentor early on could have made a big difference. Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with more seasoned engineers who’ve helped me develop a more efficient process and workflow. I can’t help but think how beneficial that guidance would have been earlier in my career—perhaps it would have saved me a gig or two! That said, I’m grateful for my unique journey. Even without the traditional shop experience or mentorship from the start, my path has shaped me into the engineer I am today, and for that, I’m thankful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In simple terms, I provide live sound mixing for touring and performing artists. Officially, I’m a Front of House engineer, which means I’m responsible for ensuring the audience hears the show exactly as intended. I’ve been fortunate to do this work worldwide, from small concert venues and churches to large arenas and private events. My journey into sound engineering wasn’t straightforward—I initially studied opera but quickly realized it wasn’t the career path for me. After graduating, I spent a couple of years soul-searching before discovering audio engineering. In 2010, I enrolled at SAE Institute in Atlanta, and it completely changed my life. Since then, I haven’t looked back.
I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve done so far. It’s a testament to what discipline and dedication can achieve. The fact that I truly love what I do is something I never take for granted, and I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had and excited for what’s to come.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the notion that there’s always a right or wrong way to approach mixing—especially when it comes to making drums or vocals sound ‘good.’ Early in my career, I was focused on following specific techniques and rules, believing that there was a correct formula for achieving the best sound. However, I quickly realized that sound and music are incredibly subjective, and what works for one person or one performance might not resonate with another. It’s really about the listener’s experience and the unique needs of the artist or client.
I had to let go of that rigidity and embrace a more flexible approach, one that blends technical expertise with creativity. This meant learning to balance fulfilling the client’s vision while also trusting my own instincts and adapting to each situation. It’s been a critical shift in my mindset that’s allowed me to become more innovative and responsive and, ultimately, better at my craft.”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There are many factors that have contributed to building my reputation, but my identity has certainly played a significant role. As a Black female mixing engineer in a field where we are still underrepresented, especially when I started 14 years ago, it’s been a unique part of my journey. However, I’ve always made a conscious decision not to rely solely on that aspect of my identity. While it’s part of who I am and how I’ve navigated the industry, I’ve worked hard to ensure my reputation is built on the quality of my work.
