Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amanda Clark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amanda, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success comes down to one thing for me: relationships. The saying goes “it’s not about what you know; it’s about who you know” and I really think that is so true for me. I own two businesses and I know that maintaining a positive customer experience is everything. Loving your product is one thing, but if your customer or client didn’t enjoy the experience, why would they choose you over someone else? They likely wouldn’t. So I’ve focused on a positive customer experience for years and it’s really benefitted me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
This business started by accident. I never thought I’d be a photographer, honestly. I was obsessed with taking sub-par photos of flowers and lily pads and then since “I owned a camera” my friends asked me to take photos of them, and then people started paying me, and I figured I should start an LLC to take advantage of tax write offs and properly pay the taxes on the $50/session I was making…those were the days haha! For me, my brand consists of having a blast at sessions, not taking life too seriously, and editing in a way that you love your photos today, as well as 20 years from now.
I’ve been shooting for well over 11 years now and each year brings pivots and changes and it’s honestly so fun to me to be able to shift this business to where I’m successful but at the same time, having a blast.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Since my business was started on accident, I never felt the need to find funding for it. I know that sounds odd, but I truly believe in starting any business small. Do the small steps in your business and the business will pay for itself. I think some people try to get too big too fast and that’s where they run into financial bottlenecks. Start with one camera and one lens, work really hard to get to know both, then when you have the money to upgrade, you’ll know exactly what you need to level up.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My best source of new clients is honestly referrals — they mean EVERYTHING to a small business and that’s one of the reasons providing a positive customer experience is so important. If your clients/customers really enjoy their experience with you, they’ll tell their friends.
