We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Chase a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Substance is defined as the most important or essential part of something; the real or essential meaning. Nearly two decades ago, at the age of 18, I conceived the tagline “make something of substance,” which I prominently featured on my Tumblr and Myspace accounts. Though its meaning initially eluded me, it served as a guiding principle—a beacon illuminating my aspirations. I aimed to create impactful innovations that would contribute to positive change, making the world a better place. This encompassed endeavors to enhance well-being, foster happiness, and create art that resonated deeply with people. Last year, as I refined my business strategy, I realized that “Substance” perfectly encapsulated the essence of my vision from my younger years. It signifies not only the ethos and integrity of my enterprise but also serves as a clear indicator of the type of work we undertake. “Substance” reflects my deepest aspirations and guides our mission to make a meaningful difference in the world, a fact of which I am immensely proud.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Substance is more than just a platform—it’s a haven for visionary women. We’re dedicated to equipping women of substance with the essential tools needed to craft their dream lives and businesses. From forging creative partnerships with budding female entrepreneurs in the wellness industry to hosting digital workshops designed to help aspiring creators lay the groundwork for their aspirations, we offer a diverse range of services tailored to empower and uplift. Our editorial content spans digital courses, insightful blog posts, and even a coffee-table inspired magazine/book, all aimed at educating and inspiring women on their conscious creative journey. With the evolution of my business in June 2023, transitioning from ōSHen to Substance, I embraced every facet of myself and my dreams. My hope is that this transformation serves as an inspiration for others to fearlessly pursue their passions and follow their hearts.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, I realize the crucial importance of self-awareness in cultivating an aligned business. Our brands aren’t just products or services—they’re reflections of who we are at our core. It’s essential to build a business that authentically mirrors our essence, rather than conforming to external expectations or perceived norms. That’s why much of my work focuses on guiding women to delve deep into self-understanding and to create from a place of heightened awareness and consciousness. By nurturing this inner connection, we can unlock our true potential and build businesses that resonate authentically with our values and aspirations.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a creative, the most fulfilling part of my journey is the profound connection I experience with myself through the act of creation. There’s something incredibly rewarding about channeling my inner experiences into tangible expressions and sharing them with the world. Through this process, not only do I deepen my connection with myself, but I also have the opportunity to connect with others who resonate with my journey. It’s through creation that we forge deeper and more meaningful connections—with ourselves and with those who share a similar path.
