We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Carlo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in many jobs over the years is learning to lead by example. You can tell a team member, employee or staff HOW to do their job, HOW to act, HOW to be the best at the role, etc. but the most effective way is for you to show them what is expected by doing it yourself. I’ve had many bosses who worked “in the trenches” next to me and many who were nowhere to be found during those tough times. I took so much more from the ones who emulated professionalism, tact, goal-setting and other learned skills than the ones who simply threw me into a role without any expectations set or real model of what they were hoping to achieve. In my business now, I strive to show my clients, partners and team members that I’m right alongside them for the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Founded in 2022 after more than a decade of experience in marketing and professional sports, I launched Gold Griff Athlete Agency to represent and connect with athletes as they pursue opportunities throughout Kansas City and beyond. My access to athletes has been built on years of trusted relationships and a shared understanding of the industry. I am most proud of my willingness to bet on myself and start an agency that I only dreamt of previously. I knew I could serve professional athletes in a meaningful way by finding opportunities to develop their brand and legacy.
In an industry dominated by men, I am proud to be the only female-founded sports agency in Kansas City.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation was built working for an NFL team and doing the hard work and grinding for years. I was the point of contact for many different groups (players, their families, agents) and over time, I gained their trust through my relationships with each of them and my ability to help them in any scenario. Because of those experiences, many of them encouraged me to set out on my own and gave me confidence to do so. It is my personal mantra to be an absolute f***ng pleasure to work with and I believe in doing so, I have a very positive reputation.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
It’s important to keep in touch with all of the clients and brands we work with on an organic basis and not just when we have a deal or opportunity. The best connections are made outside scheduled meetings and often through informal networking and connections. I pride myself on knowing my client’s family, how their last game went, their career and personal goals as well as hobbies outside of professional sports. This deep connection leads to loyalty and continued partnership for years to come.
