We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Amore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amanda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I don’t like to live with regrets, but yeah —sometimes I wish I had started my business sooner. I went to law school and then practiced law as an entertainment lawyer in NYC for 2 years. I felt like I was living someone else’s life the whole time. I knew my creative potential was so untapped in that career, but I felt like I couldn’t get out. Then 2020 was the wakeup call I needed to start living life as the true “me” before the world told me who I was supposed to be.
What would have changed about my experience if I started sooner? Good question. Well, I’ve grown SO much in the past 2.5 years, because as it turns out, I work a lot harder and smarter when I’m doing something I love. So starting sooner would have probably meant I would be even further along by now. But it’s kind of that “butterfly effect” theory where who knows what good things in my life would NOT have happened if I never went to law school. So I’m at peace with the path that got me here. It was untraditional, but all the best ones are!
Amanda, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sooo I’m the founder of a copywriting studio called Written With Amore. A copywriter is a person who creates text and marketing materials to help a business promote their products, services, and brand. A copywriter is trained in marketing strategy, consumer psychology, and SEO (search engine optimization) so the words not only sound great, but they also sell.
Think of Sephora: Their website was written by a copywriter. Their ads on the walls of their stores and out in the world? Also written by a copywriter. The packaging of your fav blush? Yup, copywriter. It’s my job to make people “add to cart,” or click that email link, or pick up that blush inside the store.
The specific services I offer are Brand Messaging and Website Copywriting. I work with both brand new businesses as well as existing businesses who want to rebrand or take their brands to the next level.
For brand new businesses, It’s all about using professional writing and strategy to create your absolute dream brand, and make the right people fall in love with it. And we’ve got to work on your SEO to get you high up on those Google search results, so that people can find you!
For existing businesses, we solve specific problems that will get you to your next level. Maybe you want to attract a different, more sophisticated type of audience. Or maybe you are repositioning the services you offer. Or maybe you are ready to really firmly establish yourself as an authority in your industry. And again, SEO is super important here.
Copywriting is freaking amazing. Words and positioning are beyond powerful. And being able to reach the #1 spot on a Google search with SEO!? I mean, hello free marketing! It’s funny because on the one hand I’m always saying “Oh I hate selling myself that’s so cringe” but on the other hand like genuinely every business needs this. Business owners, go get yourself a great copywriter (preferably me LOL) and watch the transformation that occurs. It’s a total brand glow-up, I promise.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, I pivoted my entire career in 2020 from an entertainment lawyer, to a copywriter. It was scary, but the most liberating thing I have ever done. It taught me that everything good you could ever want for yourself is on the other side of making big and scary changes. Once I saw how successful my career change trajectory was, I started making big changes in my personal life too. I distanced myself from certain negative relationships that were draining me, and it opened up my energy for so many positive things that I now have in my life. I also moved from NYC (where I was born and raised) to Tampa, Florida. I’m really just over here enjoying the sunshine and building my business on my own terms. The lawyer Amanda from a few years ago would be in shock. I think about her a lot.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I was always taught that lawyers and doctors are the ones with lots of success, money, and security, and that creative endeavors are the more risky, low-paying career paths. I don’t fault anyone who led me to believe that, because that used to be a more common outlook and now the world is changing so much. In my opinion, the biggest risk is going down a career path that isn’t true to you. You risk your mental health and your happiness. And as far as income goes, business owners have incredible earning potential. I’m a big advocate for forging your own path in business and in life.
