We recently connected with Amanda Adams and have shared our conversation below.
Amanda , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I was a pediatric therapist most of my career. I owned a private practice with some friends, and I thought that was what I was going to do the rest of my life. However, at the beginning of 2020 I found myself super burned out, experiencing strange symptoms, and having debilitating panic attacks. I knew that my season in the pediatric world was over, and it was time to transition to something else.
After selling my part of the practice to my business partners I was lost trying to figure out what I was supposed to do next. Being a pediatric therapist had become so much of my identity that I didn’t know how to fit elsewhere. I knew that I didn’t want to work for someone else. In my own healing journey, I had chosen a more holistic, natural approach, so I knew I didn’t really want to be in the traditional medical model anymore. As someone who was recovering from burnout, I started feeling a pull in my heart to start a practice that involved taking a holistic approach to stress management and mental health.
Initially, I tried to squelch it because I had no idea what that even looked like. But the more I dug my heels in and resisted the louder it got and the stronger the pull on my heart became. Eventually, I decided to go all in despite being clueless about how to even go about doing something of that sort and I was absolutely scared out of my mind. That was two years ago, and while I can say it has definitely been a wild ride, it was the best decision I have ever made. There is no doubt in my mind I am exactly where I am supposed to be and doing exactly what I am called to do.
Amanda , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been an occupational therapist for 13 years. As mentioned in the story before, I started out in pediatrics and then pivoted to stress management and mental health. My primary focus is to equip my clients with knowledge, tools, & resources to heal & regulate their nervous system in order for them to heal their bodies, manage stress & emotions effectively, increase capacity & resiliency for life, create slower rhythms, live life intentionally, and fully live in alignment with their calling.
My approach is unique in that combines my faith with my education, training, and experience as an occupational therapist in psychology, neurology, anatomy & physiology, and kinesiology along with my personal healing journey where I have taken a more holistic, natural approach. I combine mind, body, & spiritual practices, such as aromatherapy, breathwork, guided meditation, prayer, cupping, movement, grounding, etc.to heal & regulate the nervous system in order to process past emotions & trauma, rewire the brain-body connection, promote healing, & get the body back to a state of safety, peace, & harmony, so that it can heal the way it was designed.
I absolutely love getting a front row seat to watch clients heal and experience freedom. I have witnessed clients have symptoms disappear, relationships restored, careers take off, and people shift from surviving to thriving. I am truly blessed to be a part of so many stories.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele has been through word of mouth. When I first got started, I took goodie bags to offices, sent letters to other professionals, and went to all of the local networking events. While those endeavors were fruitful, I really started to see my clientele grow when clients started seeing progress and sharing it with their friends and family.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first started my entrepreneurial adventure, I thought I wanted to have a large business with multiple disciplines to better serve people. After getting a taste of that, I realized pretty quickly that the solopreneur life was more suitable for me. Since starting my current practice, it has just been me. I am a one-woman band. Sometimes it can be a little crazy but it has given me more freedom I desire.
