Aman , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Since childhood, I was more active in sports than studies. Growing up in a family where I was free to choose whatever I want to pursue in my career made my life way easier. Cricket a very popular sport in india with lots of fame and money. I was really attracted to the sport. I always wanted to be a cricketer but when I took Science as my majors in high school, Cricket was left out. After my high school I was looking for options for my undergrad.I remember watching behind the scenes of movie making on YouTube, made me curious about film making. I then decided to pursue my bachelors in film making from New York Film Academy and there it all started. I learned film making at NYFA. I had couple of options to choose as majors, but I decided to go with cinematography. Cinematography is one of the classic form of art. You play with lights, camera angles and framing. The art of story telling where you connect the audience with vision of the director. I don’t think there is a process to speed up any creative thing in this world. Art needs time and patience, the more time we take the better result we get. As freelancer cinematographer I think framing, lighting, camera angle and discipline is most essential thing, to be kept in mind while shooting a film. I have seen people compromising on quality and equipments due to low budgets. This factor always decrease the creativity and final output of the project.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi Im Aman Singh freelancer cinematographer based in Los angles and Mumbai. Wet I was young photography was my hobby, also I was more into electronics gadgets. All these new technology always attracted me. I was always curious about cameras and equipments. So to explore it on a bigger scale I decide to purse film making as a career. Everyone has a different way of working in the industry, but for me my first priority is my client. Before signing any project I learn all the details about it, check whether we have enough resources to do it. Most of the times due to low budget we can’t get certain equipments. Which is why we need to think more and work along the budget. But I think if you an artist you can create art with what you got. I think my lighting skills and behaviour on a project sets me apart. Im proud to be a cinematographer at the age of 25. I worked on many films and also assisted “Ravi Varman”(ISC) sir, he is a very know cinematographer of india. Working with me would be more like working with a childhood friend.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me being a freelancer Cinematographer I feel so comfortable, I don’t have stress to work under anyone as a full time job. I can be me, I can work according my schedule. I get peace when I work on a film project. I like the challenges I had to face while shooting a film.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Networking and showreel. These two things are really important I think reaching out new people makes it easy to find new projects. collaboration is also a way to show your work to the world. Showreels are best way to show all your projects in a min so people can see the variety of your projects you have done. It makes way easier to get new clients. Each projects you do gets you the next project.
