We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amalya Meira & Logan Blagg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Amalya Meira & Logan Blagg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Lagoon New York is a store, studio, gallery, and event space all in one. Co-opened by independent designers Amalya Meira & Logan Blagg, Lagoon functions as a multifaceted space where Amalya & Logan create their wearable art while selling complementary creations in the realms of art, body, jewelry and housewares. The thing that sets the shop apart from industry standard is having the studio in the shop. This allows us to not only educate the consumer about sustainability, but also breaks down the 3rd wall of creation. Since we are able to offer custom design and alterations on the spot, this puts a face and a community behind our work, & celebrates what we love most about what we do.

Amalya Meira & Logan Blagg, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Lagoon was started by designers & friends, Amalya Meira & Logan Blagg. The intention behind the space is grounded in sustainability, connection to nature and community engagement. We approach our work as wearable art, and strive to create products that don’t exist in the world, while using materials that are already in orbit, such as deadstock, scraps & vintage finds. We believe we’re more creative within parameters, which is why sustainability is such a strong backbone to our creative voices. Both designers create one-of-a-kind pieces within their individual brand names:
Amalya’s work marries beauty and grit. With dreamlike crochet shapes and sunprinted silks, these pieces are created for the curious to love. The polished and exquisitely unrefined mingle through constant exploration in fabric manipulation, silhouette and upcycling. Experimental and distinctive in her design, Amalya practices zero-waste construction, and works predominantly with natural fibers.
Logan leaves no thread unaccounted for, seeing the value in all materials. With a paramount interest in sustainable production and playful envisioning, her mission is to dress forms in this harmony without contributing to the waste of the fashion industry. Forged by an ever growing collection of remnants and jewels, Logan’s clothing and accessories shine with the past, fusing retro futurism and fantasy into one of a kind pieces.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Amalya and Logan met in the spring of 2017 here in Brooklyn. With Logan being new to the city, she was on the search for like-minded designers & creators in the area- and via Not Just A Label, discovered Amalya’s work. She immediately reached out inquiring about a job. Amalya, although not hiring, received the email with delight, not wanting this potential friend to go into the ether, so responded with a “Let’s meet for a drink!” The two became fast friends, working together on passing creative endeavors, while dreaming of what a store/studio space could look like. Years later, this dream became Lagoon!

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
Yes, all of our designs are made by us in house. Both of us were lucky enough to have our artistic perspectives nurtured from a young age by artistic female forces, with our attentions tuned to a heightened sense of texture and eye for design. Amalya & Logan both went to school to formally learn design, pattern-making, and sewing. Amalya holds degrees from Central St. Martins, Parsons and Eugene Lang, while Logan studied at Stephens College, then honing in her sewing skills working as a production/sample sewer. With this training and experience, both carry the skills of creating their own products. There are definitely challenges that arise with creating one of ones all by hand, but this also allows every piece to be fused with magic from each designer.
