We were lucky to catch up with Amaia Marzabal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Amaia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
This past July of 2023 I had the privilege to work with two organizations MerchArt and The Porch Upstate. The result was a unique exhibition of my work and an outdoor art installation. This was my first solo project in New York State, where I got the chance to collaborate with people from different art backgrounds. All of our hard work including lots of meetings was worthy all the results.
Personally I am a team effort oriented person and I think this project had a very strong sense of community. Where everybody brought their best foot forward into it. Some of the steps that had to be taken involved creating the big mural installation, managing the gallery, photography, marketing and sales.
It was very meaningful to everybody involved because it brought a community of people living in the area of Halcottsville (Upstate NY) together. People gathered to enjoy the art at a unique historical building in Catskills.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a Spanish painter based and living in New York. Since I migrated to the US I have been in a search to express and talk about my own identity in a global scenario.
I started to generate a language to talk about how I was feeling as a migrant person. Other topics were also interesting to me like: human relationships, social norms, emotions, self-awareness imperfection, incompleteness and the ability to find a place in the world that resembles who we are.
From the use of photographs of popular culture and my surroundings my paintings represent an imaginary of what my own experience is.
One of my strong points in my work, I would say is the ability to connect with the viewers emotions through the images that I create.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Lately, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist, for me is the unbelievable support and inspiration that I have been receiving from the individuals and organizations during my last art project Lost Identity.
It was exciting to see so many people come to our opening event, that took so much work to organize. It is the reason why I do art, so the public can come and actually live through my art as an experience they can enjoy.
I really value human connection and I use my art as a medium to tap into that. The main connection happens when creating a meaningful impact into the viewer.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For example, talking about my last show, the Lost Identity, My goal was to create a ritual space. Where people can find themselves surrounded by a lot of gigantic faces looking at the viewer. Being at night at that space really creates an intimidating feeling. But the idea was making the visitor think about their own identity, about finding your own voice in a global society.
