We recently connected with Alyssia Aguilar and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an artist I have always wanted to share who I am through my art. In 2017 I gave birth to twins at 25 weeks old and unfortunately at 16 days old our son passed away from sepsis in the NICU. It was through that time that I wanted to use my art as therapy and help cope with all the emotions I was feeling.
I found a non-profit based out of California called Sepsis Alliance. It was with them that that I was able to share my sons story, but also learn what sepsis was and how it has effected many lives. It was then that I offered my art as a donation in honor of my sons life, and as a way for me to not only giveback but help raise awareness of what sepsis is.
That project is and will always be ongoing to continue my efforts in raising awareness but also remembering and honoring my sons life through art.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After our loss in 2017 I started to post my work and share my art on social media. It was through social media that my audience started to grow locally and allowed me to do freelance work. I was excited because it was a way for me to bring in an income as a stay at home mom, and still be doing art.
However doing art for clients is not the same as doing art for myself. So I longed to really bring my own art to life and then I learned about NFTs. This was a whole new ball game and really resonated with me as a creator. So I took the leap and stopped taking clients to solely focus on my NFTs and building a community around my work through Twitter.
I am known as The Lofty Mom, and have made some incredible connections and friends in web3. I have some amazing collectors and supporters that many may know like, Randi Zuckerberg, Eva Longoria and more! I am now also a Twitter creative partner and have had the opportunity to create the first Women In NFTs community which has been featured via HYPEBEAST, ADAge and more.
I also have a Fashion Collection with SHEIN! The collection is called “SHEIN X THE LOFTY MOM” and is now up and live to shop! It is based on my Latina roots and is a brightly colored 8 piece collection that is perfect for the SUMMER!
I am now launching a 10K NFT project alongside my husband who is a web developer. Our project is all about our story of loss and how our Mexican Culture is an important factor to who we are. We are excited to launch this May and start building community around our NFT Project, “Etheral Avatars”.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs is a huge world of opportunity. I would have never thought that by joining this community there would be so much help, support and growth to be made. I know web3 is a new world and many may feel intimidated or unsure to try something new, but there is a whole new community just waiting to onboard and help you succeed on the other side.
It takes a lot of time to learn and to truly understand the ecosystem of the NFT space but so many are offering support and a helping hand. The best way to start learning is by jumping in on Twitter and listening to Twitter spaces.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a Latina NFT Artist is that I am a woman, mother, and Latina. All these things are needed in the web3 space. Representation matters and the only way we can grow web3 is by showing up and being there!
When I first entered the NFT space there was very few women, and very few women of color. So I would get pushback, devalued, and mocked by being a “mom” and not an artist. I have been told my art is cute, and just not accepted from the male dominated perspective. HOWEVER fast forward to present day and there are WOMEN EVERYWHERE. Still growing in numbers but our voices are being heard and seen.
So to be part of this movement of new art in web3 and being part of the women forming the pathway for more to join…I am honored. I want to be that representation to show that minority women can have value and impact! That moms can be more than just a “mom”. I hope that one day my own little Latinas will be able to walk into web3 and not have to break down barriers that are still up, that the women of today will strongly push through doors and walls for them to be welcomed in as they are!
