We recently connected with Alyssa Rubio and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, thanks for joining us today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment you can give yourself is your own time built in with discipline and confidence. I went into photography knowing nothing but, what I thought looked best. I had no teachers or guidance. When I wanted to learn photography, I had to go full In and put in all of my own time into it without having anyone over me making sure I am learning and growing. Time is truly the most important investment in any project, so you have to make sure you use that time wisely. I was working a full time job while pursing photography and had to make time to invest into myself and into learning. I used all of my free time learning. I put myself out there and took so many risk. But when you go in with confidence and the willingness to fail so you can grow, it’s truly the best thing you can do for yourself when you’re first starting out. It really taught me to keep up with learning and with working, when you work for yourself it’s easy to fall out of a routine. Time is always essential and how you use it is even more crucial!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello!!
I’m alyssa! I like to say I’m a creative photographer, which can go more into funky surreal photos. I’m based in New Orleans and have grown and learned here throughout my whole photography journey! I picked up a camera in 2021 and taught myself pretty much everything I know,
I love standing out, I love being extra. I love creating photos that people aren’t expecting. At this point I have a style, but with every shoot the concept is so different, that hope to make the viewers brain think for a minute when viewing it! I love to say, I enjoy making people look funky in an editorial way with vibrant colors. I also love shooting concepts that don’t make sense, but it looks like it makes sense. Melted icecream in a parking lot, bunny ears hat In a flower field, purple pillows on the beach. That’s how I would sum up my style in a few sentences.
I take pride in teaching myself everything and working with very few resources. It really makes me resourceful and open my mind to creating in different ways. Most sets on shoots require so many minds with so many hands helping on set and post shoot, typically when I shoot, it is a 2 person show. Sometimes 3/4 if we each bring someone to help haha. Typically it’s me and the model putting our minds together to style/creative direct/makeup/hair/set design/ect.
I also want anyone to know that works with me is I truly enjoy this. I have had part time jobs now while doing photography to help financially support exactly what I want to do. I’m thankful for those jobs but they don’t fulfill me. Doing photography and working on fun creative projects truly brings me joy. I am typically so invested and involved in every shoot even if it isn’t my idea because I want it to come together better than imagine. I believe being fully invested in your shoots really helps the vision come to life. Being creative is truly me at my happiest and I enjoy doing it so much.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Personally, I think there is nothing more rewarding in life than creating something with your own thoughts. As a kid, my mind never stopped (even still now). I am always thinking, of plenty of thoughts but a chunk of my thoughts are of creating something. I love putting how I feel into a photo. Sometimes it’s something I think would look so cool and I just want to do it. To be able to have a thought and create a set and work with a model to create more of a vision to then take it out on a camera and create a photo is so crazy to me. A lot of people don’t understand the work that goes into photography, most of it is the planning before and post editing. To create a final image is so rewarding, it’s the “wow I created that” feeling.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have so many goals, and I’m okay if I don’t check them all off as I’m sure they will change. The main goal is being able to create without “having to create”.
I also want to be able to just creative direct at some point. I enjoy putting together concepts so much. I actually started learning photography because I wanted to learn film, and figured a camera was a good start. I love telling stories, I want to be able to create my own film one day. I also want to create a music video. As you can see I just want to create, I love specializing in photography, but I don’t want to feel limited on what I can create. To me the best part about creating is not being limited! The possibilities for me are endless and I hope to dive into more of the creative world.
