Alyssa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I am a dedicated and passionate filmmaker who from an early age, discovered a love for filmmaking as a means of self-expression and capturing the essence of the world. My primary goal is to amplify the voices of others by sharing their stories through film. One of my central objectives as a filmmaker is to create emotionally impactful and cathartic experiences for the audience. I believe in the transformative power of cinema and its ability to provide catharsis, allowing viewers to engage with complex emotions and find solace in shared experiences. My journey as a filmmaker has been marked by an unwavering commitment to authenticity and emotional depth. I aim to foster empathy and understanding, encouraging open conversations and destigmatization. Driven by my passion for storytelling and commitment to exploring the human experience, I’m continuing to push the boundaries of my craft. Through my films, I aspire to create meaningful cinematic experiences that resonate deeply with audiences, fostering empathy, understanding, and an appreciation for the beauty and complexities of the human spirit.
Alyssa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Explaining “what I do” can be quite a loaded question, but I’ll give it a shot and share a glimpse of my world with you all! I am a video director, editor, videographer, and photographer. I don’t have a specific “niche” or one defined “thing” I specialize in. Instead, I embrace the beauty of diversity in my work, allowing me to tackle a wide range of projects and collaborate with different minds from all walks of life. Whether it be working on a narrative short film, micro- documentary, highlight videos, or branded corporate content, I embrace all types of projects and love that every day is a different thing. I believe there’s a story to be told in every project I take on and I love getting to bring ideas to life and put my own visual twist and taste into it.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I can say it truly feels like a dream come true getting to turn my side hustle into a full time career. I am more than grateful that I was able to be financially independent right out of undergrad doing what I studied and what I love. I pride myself in this because I truly came from nothing. No connections, no money, and no one to pave the way for me. Every opportunity that I’ve been given are things that I worked hard for and sought out myself. I believe not having much growing up and falling into a “scarcity mindset” fueled my desire to hustle and take what I love and make something out of it. Most opportunities I’ve been given has been just simply saying yes to any and every gig. Most times, one gig would lead to another. You never know who your going to encounter, and what conversation you can strike up with that person. Networking is huge in this industry. I’m still learning how to navigate it and how to seek out more clients but I’m proud of the progress I’ve made so far and that the clients/companies I am working with are consistent and loyal.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
From a young age, I had to learn self-reliance. I encountered life’s challenges at a young age, taking on a mindset of scarcity within myself. Growing up, I often harbored fears of never achieving anything significant, or of succumbing to the patterns of my family without evolving further. Amidst these concerns, creating content provided me with consistent solace. Whether through photography, short films, or micro-documentaries, it served as a means to express both myself and the intricacies of the world around me. It evolved into my art form, a tool for deciphering the complexities of this life. One day, it all just clicked that this was my lifelong calling—not merely to create, but to do so with purpose, aiming to make a positive impact just like it had on my own life. From that moment onward, resilience became integral to every decision I made, given the multitude of obstacles I faced. Emerging from humble beginnings, every opportunity I pursued required alternative means of shining beyond mere wealth and status. It has been a journey fraught with difficult choices, each day presenting its own set of challenges. Yet, it has been an immensely rewarding experience. While I may not have achieved all my goals yet, I realize I have accomplished many of them, and I couldn’t be prouder of myself.
