We recently connected with Alyssa Kossmeyer and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know
When I first decided to pursue Real Estate, I was a few years into my career as an HR Analyst after graduating from UMSL with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. I had the fear of uncertain income and no health insurance holding me back from fully jumping in to Real Estate. My husband was my biggest supporter, always encouraging me to take the leap into Real Estate full time; he recognized my love for, and drive to be successful in, this line of work. I finally took that leap in 2020 and I can confidently say that I am in my element, knowing in my heart of hearts that I made the best choice for my family and I. I truly cannot imagine a career outside of Real Estate. They always say, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” While I do work hard helping my clients sell their properties to their fullest potential, and helping others to find the home of their dreams, I can attest that this theory is true. If I had to start over, I would have jumped in fully and committed to my greatest ability and pushed past any self-doubt that was lingering. If I could talk to my younger self I would say, “You have to go for it and trust that you CAN do this!” I think in order to really be successful in this business, and any business, it’s important to find someone who has many years on you; someone you admire and want to model yourself after, and enter into a mentorship with them. I would not be the agent I am today without my mentor and, of course, the unending support of my husband, family, friends, and clients.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised right here in the Lou! I grew up in South County, graduating from Oakville Senior High – GO TIGERS! After high school I attended STLCC before going on to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UMSL. After college, my husband & I purchased our first home in West County that we sold last year and now reside in Eureka, giving me a unique perspective of the greater St. Louis area.
I have always been interested in design. Believe it or not, I started out as an art major; drawing is another passion of mine. Growing up watching HGTV with my mom, the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree…even if it did take quite the path to get me to where I am now!
I cannot stress enough how much I love my job. Being able to help my clients through one of the most stressful processes, and major life events, is so incredibly rewarding and I don’t take it for granted. Choosing an agent you trust and who has been in your shoes is so important. I work hard for my clients; their victory is my victory. I have personally been both a buyer and a seller, and I know firsthand the challenges involved. I pride myself on being readily available for my client, quickly returning phone calls and making last-minute showings happen. I look at each home I walk through with the same eyes I would for my own purchase or sale. My client’s best interest is my number one priority, always. While this is my work, it’s not just a sale being my victory. Any day I play a part in my clients finding the home of their dreams, or making the best sale possible on their property, is a day I can hang my hat on.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency. I treat each of my clients as I would want to be treated every single time and my clients recognize and appreciate that. In this business, word-of-mouth is powerful both in a positive and negative way, so it’s important you are giving each transaction your best. One bad experience can put a stain on your reputation.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals from current and past clients have been my biggest source of new clients without a doubt! That’s why I say it is so, so important to be your best, most professional self, and responsive every single time.
