We were lucky to catch up with Alyssa Jordon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents have been my biggest supporters with every goal in life! Growing up I spent a majority of my time in my Momma’s beauty shop, I would find any reason to stay there and help or just chat! We also lived next door so it was easy to visit. Chances are if you called you would have heard baby Aly’s voice on the other end saying “Majic touch, how can I help you?” Little did I know, this whole time I watched her work I was falling in love with the way my momma serviced her clients. I learned how to be patient and listen when others shared about their day, I watched her grieve clients as they passed and celebrated others as they began their lives. She taught me compassion and dedication, something that has helped me in all aspects of my life. I mostly learned how to appreciate providing services for people and building meaningful relationships. My Daddioo on the other hand is and always will be my #1 fan. From any sport to any passion that I loved, he has always been right by my side cheering me on. He taught me that if I set my mind to something I can and will achieve it! My dad is the first one I call (if not mom) with my problems because if he can’t solve it, then he knows who could. Overall I think my parents did a lot right when raising me. I am so grateful to have them by my side through this journey.
Alyssa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those that don’t know me my name is Alyssa but I go by Ally most of the time. Ally Jeann was a nickname that my dad frequently used and it ended up sticking! Makeup began to became a passion for me in 2016. My cousin Jon mentioned that I should try to work a holiday season at Sephora and the rest truly was history I was hired on after my first holiday season and was grateful to meet so many amazing local artists through my time spent there. I’ve now been a free lance artist for almost five years now and each year is bigger and BETTER than the year before. My personal passion is for natural bridal and also creative makeup looks! One of my favorite things about natural bridal is the fact that a lot of brides still want to feel like they’re extra special for their big day, but get nervous when they don’t feel or look like themselves. The look on their face when they see the final look always makes me flutter a little. In the end I want each and every client to leave my chair feeling amazing. Whether that is with a red lip and wing or with soft and glowy cheeks, I want to manifest your ideal look for you! My second goal is to have a good time and I can promise that we will be laughing throughout the whole service. I want you to feel like you’re getting your makeup done by your long lost best friend, I want my clients to leave as friends. Sometimes this truly is the case with my Fredericktown peeps, shout-out to my hometown. My Fredericktown people have truly poured their love into me and I can only hope that I do the same. I am truly so excited to see where my makeup career takes me and it is all because of my clients and friends! You are all the reason I get to pour my soul into a passion that rewards in more ways than one. I have big plans for 2025 and I can not wait to share more information with you all in the new year.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of providing wedding makeup is inevitably getting to be a part of one of the most special days for some. I love getting to look at pictures that past brides share and knowing how fun their morning was! Someone chose ME to be apart of their day, they put their trust into me and my craft and I truly can’t think of a more rewarding feeling. Makeup is so personal, this is someone’s face and how they present and identify themselves to the world. I love seeing the confidence in a client literally light up whenever thy see their reflection, that is truly the most rewarding feeling there is in makeup.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Saying yes to every client! When I first began my journey in makeup I said yes no matter what. What I had to unlearn is that you don’t always have to say yes and not everyone is meant to be your client and that’s okay! It doesn’t mean that either of you are bad people because it didn’t work as smoothly as you expected, both can coexist. I think this is one of the hardest lessons to learn as an artist because you want to be able to service anyone and everyone, but let’s be real. Not everyone meshes with everyone, you might already be booked, and sometimes it’s just something in your gut. I thought that I had to constantly prove something by being chosen, when in reality I am someone’s dream artist and I am so happy to have found so many of my dream clients.
