We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alyssa Harper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
As a business owner, I am extremely happy! I enjoy being creative and making women look and feel beautiful. I love having full creative control when it comes to branding and marketing as well. It is great being able to make your own schedule and use all of your time as you please. Although there are a lot of pros to being an entrepreneur, it is not always easy. It takes a great deal of self discipline. I have had regular jobs in the past, but they did not allow me to fully express my creativity and fulfill my passions.
Alyssa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From a very young age, I have always been interested in art, bright colors, and drawing. I tried many different hobbies at a young age from fashion design and sewing to acrylic nails and more. Around the age of 13, I began learning to style hair and realized it was a strong passion of mine. I enjoyed being able to transform people’s appearance and confidence! From then, I decided to take it seriously and joined the cosmetology pathway at my technical and career high school, Woodville Tompkins. After graduating, I attended Paul Mitchell the School Atlanta where I graduated and received my cosmetology license. In 2019, I decided to take my business, Highclassflair, seriously. I specialize in natural hair care, extensions, and make up. One thing that sets me apart is that I create a relaxed, professional, individualized experience for each client, ensuring they are satisfied and looking forward to their next service!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
At 13, a lot of the hairstyling that I learned was self taught through lots of trial and error on my mannequin heads and from Youtube University. Also a big shoutout to my mom who used to let me experiment on her hair! I started with braiding then moved into sewins. My craft eventually got so good that I had a full clientele in high school and my parents transformed our sitting room into a mini salon. After graduation I knew that it was time to take my skill seriously where i then transformed my hobby into a career.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I do sell Raw Vietnamese hair extensions and units from my luxury wig collection. I also provide online webinars at HCF University. These can all be purchased at www.hcflair.com.
