We were lucky to catch up with Alyson Berry recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alyson, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
In our industry, there’s a common misconception that you have to take any and all services that come your way in order to build a sustainable clientele and career. This is something stylists have been groomed to believe for as long as I can remember, why? Because we didn’t realize we were the ones really sitting in the drivers seat.
I remember years ago my salon owner telling me I was crazy for trying to get clients to see me LESS often, that I was shooting myself in the foot and I wouldn’t be able to create a successful business that way. Fast forward 10 years and I’m a proud salon owner and six figure stylist doing just that.
We can’t be afraid to be different, to go with our gut, and to just ignore what others may think. Them saying YOU can’t do it, is only them saying that THEY couldn’t do it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At Mane + Magnolia, we specialize in low maintenance color and extensions. Our mission is to create seamless color grow outs that allow you to extend the time between visits, while still looking and feeling beautiful!
We realize that busy moms and business owners have a lot on their plate. Between soccer games, homework, networking events, and meetings, there just simply aren’t enough hours in the day, but that shouldn’t mean we have to put ourselves on the back burner.
Our motto is “get your hair done because you want to, not because you have to”. We’ve created an oasis for busy women to relax and feel pampered while knowing their hair will look amazing even if they don’t have time to come back for 6 months!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
For us, it’s all about building trust and understanding our clients pain points so they feel heard. During consultations, we listen to our clients needs and previous experiences and use those as inspiration for future social media captions. During styling time, we get curious about the frustrations they may experience at home and use that as fuel to help educate them and others with tricks to make their life easier. For us, it’s all about the little things and learning everything we can to help serve them better.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The best way to build loyalty is to make people feel heard and valued. Period. For us, it’s about building genuine connections and growing them over time. Over the years, we’ve been known to send flowers to clients for milestone birthdays or anniversaries, send a card for new job promotions, have a thank you gift waiting for sending some of their friends to us, and little things like that! If we take a step back and think about ourselves and what would make us feel special, the answer is clearer than we may realize!
