Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alysha Tucker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alysha, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I currently manage my own social media. There’s so much information thats out there to help you grow and build an online presence. I think it’s important to take control of your marketing and social media, because not understanding it and being afraid of it opens you up to being taken advantage of by unqualified “marketing gurus.”
In addition your small business and brand should express your personality as well as your brands personality, nobody can convey that better than YOU.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m the owner of Blush Baby Los Angeles, Permanent Makeup & Academy. I think what has always really made my business stand out is my attention for detail and my authenticity.
It’s really important for not only my services offered but my training program to give clients and students realstic expectations of permanent makeup.
In the beauty industry there’s a lots of glitz, glamor and photoshop, and that’s just not my thing. I’d rather possess an eye for detail and take my time on each client, versus packing in as many as possible, as quickly as possible, missing important details and making mistakes. With the right eye for detail and a commitment to showing real results and staying true to that mission and yourself, you won’t need filters and photoshop in the beauty industry to showcase your work.
Training your eyes to really look for detail, and caring enough to give your clients that level of commitment to their service is much more valuable than any editing app.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I first started I spent so much time, money and effort into learning my craft from educators who didn’t care. Eventually I realized that everything I learned from training I had to unlearn, and start teaching myself. The biggest struggle in the PMU industry is that everyone is more motivated by money than they are in giving a meaningful training or providing real results.
There’s countless influencer artists who have done less than 50 clients, but offer trainings, and mainly discuss marketing versus actually learning the skill.
You leave these classes with the blueprint on social media marketing, poor quality equipment, and little to no useful, correct knowledge on how to preform PMU.
I’m grateful I was able to figure it out and dedicated enough to put together the pieces on my own and relearn new skills, because many PMU artists quit only a few months after their first class.
I’ve built my entire training program around NOT leaving artists in the dark, and giving them the education, and tools they need to succeed. I follow them every step of the way and cheer them on the entire time. It’s important to me to help mentor new artists and ultimately be apart of changing the direction the PMU industry is headed, so the industry can continue to grow and evolve.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had a previous employer who refused to let me change techniques, and methods. They wouldn’t even allow me to do new services like Lip Blush that I was trained and qualified to do. They constantly put me down and refused to let me grow, it really made me doubt myself and my talent.
I had very few clients, and was given grunt work.
I would drive hours to work, just to be told they canceled, when they never even booked in the first place.
I was underpaid and told I wasn’t worth more.
I felt close to quitting everything I had worked so hard for.
As soon as I left, everything changed for me. It was hard starting all by myself, but the moment I started changing my techniques, and adding new services to my menu I was told I couldn’t do and wasn’t good enough to do, my business blew up.
I was held back from doing Lip Blush, and being told i wasn’t good enough of an artist to do it, to Lip Blush becoming my #1 requested service and having an amazing training program I’m incredibly proud of.
Now when someone tells me I can’t do something, my first instinct is to say “Bet.”
