We recently connected with Alysa Adkins and have shared our conversation below.
Alysa, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path very early in life. I found immense joy in drawing, painting, and photography and realized quickly that the act of creation itself was deeply fulfilling and became a natural outlet for me. I had an art teacher in elementary school, Mr. McDermott, who gave me so much encouragement and support which I know helped form me as an artist. Knowing from a very young age that someone in the world thought I was talented was so reassuring then and it’s something that I’ve been able to hold on to for all of my years. Encouragement and knowing someone believes in you can do wonders for a young person learning how to believe in themselves.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my own art and graphic design business about 15 years ago. I think the idea of freelance was always an enticing thought for me so when I was in the world of new motherhood and trying to find a way to be with my son while also pursuing my career, starting my own business seemed to fit perfectly. And while those early days were very difficult trying to split my focus between my child and my work, I would absolutely do it all again.
Much of my work consists of branding and logo design for women who are starting their own businesses. In the past few years I’ve stated working directly with women shop owners and selling my own products in their stores, like tshirts, prints, stickers, etc. Working with other women small business owners is one of the most enjoyable parts of my job.
It’s a true gift to have the opportunity to work with so many different women on so many different levels.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can best support artists by actively purchasing their work by buying directly from the artist, attending their art events and exhibitions, promoting them through word-of-mouth and social media, commissioning pieces by hiring them to create custom pieces, supporting local arts organizations and advocating for arts education. Recognizing the value of art in the community enriches the cultural landscape thereby creating a stable environment for artists to thrive and express themselves freely.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What drives me as an artist is the desire to communicate my ideas and emotions, the joy of the creative process, and the need for self-expression. My mission as an artist is to inspire others by creating art that explores the female perspective through inclusion, supporting other women and artists, and inspiring healing.
