We were lucky to catch up with Alycer Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alycer, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
Starting a real estate brokerage can be a thrilling endeavor, but it’s not without its challenges. For me, the decision to strike out on my own was borne out of a desire for greater control over my career and a passion for helping clients achieve their real estate goals.
Some of the biggest challenges I faced were building a brand and marketing along with putting the necessary systems in place. Without the support and resources of a larger firm, I had to work extra hard to establish these while still assisting my clients.
Another challenge was learning to balance the demands of running a business with the needs of my clients. It can be tempting to focus solely on the bottom line, but ultimately, it’s the quality of service you provide that will keep clients coming back and referring you to others.
Looking back, I would have invested more time and resources into marketing and branding early on. Building a recognizable and trustworthy brand is essential in the competitive world of real estate.
If you’re a young professional considering starting a brokerage, my advice would be to do your research and be prepared to work hard. It’s best to spend your first several years in the industry focused on learning as much as you can and taking advantage of any coaching and mentoring possible. Take the time to build a strong foundation, invest in your brand and marketing, and always prioritize your client’s needs. And remember, success takes time and patience, so don’t get discouraged if things don’t take off immediately.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Any good Leader knows that you are only as good as the team you have around you. You want to make sure that you have people on your team that have expertise in the areas where you lack knowledge.
Maintaining high morale requires effort and dedication. Building strong relationships, setting clear expectations, creating a positive environment, recognizing and rewarding good work, encouraging professional development, and leading by example are all strategies that help achieve this goal. By following these tips, anyone can create an environment that fosters productivity, collaboration, and job satisfaction.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
When I was younger, my mother was instrumental in teaching me skills to foster my love for entrepreneurship along with my father who was an entrepreneur.
As an adult, I am thankful that I have a pastor, Rickie G. Rush, that teaches us what it takes to be a leader and entrepreneur.
I have also read several books in the Go-Giver series – The Go-Giver Leader, The Go-Giver, and Go-Givers Sell More. These books have helped me develop my entrepreneurial skills and mindset. I often read articles and blogs from many prominent business owners.
