We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aly Mattoon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I have taught at some wonderful local studios over the years but I’ve always felt like an entrepreneur and have gained more and more autonomy each year. I’m proud to be my own one woman business. At some point I may want to expand into having a team but for right now it’s very fullfilling being in complete control over everything
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I have been doing Pilates since I was in Performing Arts High School for Dance and Teaching Pilates Based movement for about 15 years. I say Pilates “based” movement because I pull from many types of movement modalities including functional strength training , dance and GYROTONIC ®️.
I’m most proud of my dedication and desire to care for my clients in whatever state they are in. . My job never feels stagnate because people are so interesting. I love that we as humans aren’t symmetrical and have all of these things going on that can guide me in programming sessions.
I think I’m a unique teacher in that I’m constantly learning myself and questioning things. I try to offer the most up to date information and reframe certain ideas that the Pilates industry has adopted over the years. I would say my approach is very progressive :)
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
This is an interesting question because I used to think marketing on Instagram was the most effective way in growing my clientele. I was starting to get very burnt out and discouraged and recently realized that because my business is so small and built on relationships my growing clientele is through referrals. I’ve given myself a break on the pressures of having to market so much on social media. I still use it but I don’t have the same approach as I did before
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I think I would choose the same profession but do think about what going to PT school would have looked like.
