We were lucky to catch up with Aly Brooks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aly, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Self awareness is critical as an entrepreneur. Having an objective perspective in successes and failures will take you far. I like to use the information to gage my next steps. Over the last three years I had had to put so many ideas and creations to rest but that is the nature of a product based business. I remember one Holiday season I introduced green Christmas tree magnets. 80% of my customers assumed its was soap and tried smelled them, haha. I introduced them the following year but in simple grey with gold flakes, problem solved.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I create handcrafted concrete decor. I aspire to be the missing link for consumers who enjoy curating cozy spaces with minimalistic, unique, accessible peices while supporting a small business. I began as my love for house plants grew during Covid as I sought one of a kind planter pots. During this time of uncertainty maybe people turned to renovations, landscaping and gardening. I saw a rise in pot prices so I decided to create my own. I went to Home Depot and came out with 2 buckets and a bag of the rockiest concrete on the market. Although my first creation was quite archaic, I preserved and moved into the interior decor realm.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Authenticity plays a big role in my social media engagement. I am naturally an extrovert which I believe creates a comfortable space for my current and potential clients. I frequently share market experiences, customer interactions, polls, live videos and day to day life as an entrepreneur. Would you believe it if I told you there was a time I never showed my face on any of my pages? In the beginning I literally posted pictures of things I made and assumed no one cared about the maker. Little did I know as soon as I introduced the world to Aly my popularity would grow.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
About 8 months ago I experienced a big injury and wa forced to re evaluate. Although this event was a mental and physical obstacle it gave me TIME to refocus. When I was able to return to my business I decided to lighten my market schedule, discontinue facilitating workshops and my monthly business meet up. Months later I did a total rebrand, I am 1000% sure that hiatus gave me the mental clarity and capacity I needed to gain a fresh perspective.
