Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alron Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alron, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am much happier as a creative and an artist. There’s nothing in this world I would rather do and be. As far as thinking about working a regular job, I do work a regular job still and it serves as a distraction, but a necessity since I’m still working on getting financing for my projects. My day job pays bills and at times pays for my film and music projects and I appreciate it, but I want to move into writing and producing music and films full time. Anytime I think about working a regular job, my stomach turns because there’s no happiness there. There’s no joy for me in that realm. It is easier to get a regular job, but taking the easy way out is basically giving up. Anything worth having is worth fighting for and it’s gonna be a hard fight. Whether it’s love, that woman or man you’re in love with, to live the financial freedom you want, to be the supreme athlete, and of course to be successful in the career you dream about and not settling on the job that’s practical. I always tell people this and I live by this phrase: Live your life as if your future self is watching. This means you need to make the decisions and make the moves and work hard now so you can build a life for the future you. Like, there are times when people say, “I wish I knew then, what I know now or I wish I would’ve done this years ago because I would be better off now.” Well, maybe you’re not where you should be because you didn’t do what you were supposed to do years ago. If you could talk to your past self, what would you tell him or her? Would you be disappointed in yourself? Would you scold yourself for not dedicating yourself to building the life you want in the present? So, that’s why I say, “Live your life as if your future self is watching,” because what you do now is a setup for the future you could have if you stay the course and never settle.
Alron, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Alron Phillips is an award-winning filmmaker, founder, and owner of NuJuRu Studios and an experienced director dedicated to every project from pre-production to post-production. He’s considered a great visionary that has a gift to bring stories to life. His style of directing is to use every element in filmmaking to tell stories by using lighting, set design, camera movement and angles, color, sound design, etc. He believes that every aspect should be able to tell the story on its own and when you bring every element together with the script and actors/actresses then you have such a great compelling story that takes your audience into different lives in other worlds. One of his main goals is to make sure that as an independent filmmaker his films rival Hollywood in quality and be far superior in storytelling. One of the things that set him apart from other filmmakers and directors is that he makes it his responsibility to challenge everyone on set to do things they’ve never done before, including the actors, making them better filmmakers and actors after working with him. He’s also an actor himself, so when he directs his actors he has the ability to show them what is needed in the scenes and not just tell them. Everything about his approach to filmmaking, writing, set conduct, quality, and directorial style sets him apart from other filmmakers.
“I actually started film school at FIRST Institute in Orlando, FL only to learn how to produce music videos, because I was a music producer at the time working on my album. I need to learn music videos and how to create them. But during class, our instructor showed us a video of how director Christopher Nolan put together the interrogation scene in “The Dark Knight.” I was blown away at how he told the story using everything involved, from equipment, to angles, to actors and script. I was in love with filmmaking ever since thing.”
The current services Alron Phillips and NuJuRu Studios offer is directing, cinematography, post-production services, film scoring, and full production services producing films from pre-production to post-production. He is also an accomplished writer as well.
One of the things that are different about his films is that he doesn’t have sex or nudity in his films. He also doesn’t put kissing in his films unless the actors that are kissing are married in real life. Part of his decision to leave these elements out of his films is his faith and relationship with God and keeping the purity of his films that way. Though he doesn’t do many faith-based films he still keeps that discipline in his films. The other reason why he doesn’t put kissing in his films is because of what that could do to the families connected to the actors and how kissing could misconstrue feelings in the actors that aren’t meant to be real creating feelings and relationships that aren’t meant to be. He also doesn’t allow certain conversations on his set that would otherwise offend or make anyone feel uncomfortable and harassed in any way. Everyone knows that when working with him, his set is a safe space.
If you’re a filmmaker and you want to take your films to a higher quality, if you’re a writer or screenwriter who wants to see your story brought to life, if you’re an actor or actress that wants to be part of great films that can help catapult your career forward, if you’re a producer looking for someone to direct your film to award-winning status, or if you’re a movie fan who want to see great films that take you to new worlds and different lives, then Alron Phillips and NuJuRu Studios is where you need to be, who you need to hire and work with, and who you need to watch.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
These days people are hard to please when it comes to anything, especially in the entertainment industry. There are so many people trying to be critics of our creative works and it’s usually from people who have never put a film together and don’t know what it takes to put a successful film together. And technology and social media make it easy for anyone to do that. It gives the audience a sense of being part of our world and they talk as if their experts. They tear films down without even knowing how to make a film or has they’ve never made a film themselves. People in the industry aren’t any better. You have filmmakers bashing other filmmakers’ films because they feel the film should’ve been done or written a different way. Instead of encouraging other filmmakers or just saying, “great job,” they’d rather say what they did wrong and how much they hated the film. We’re a community of creatives and we should be supporting each other and rooting for each other to succeed. Also, creatives need to realize that just because a film wasn’t done the way you would do it doesn’t mean it was done wrong. Just understand that directors and writers and actors are different with different approaches. Martin Scorsese would direct a film differently than Quentin Tarantino. It doesn’t mean either way is wrong, it’s just different. Again, let’s support each other as a filmmaking family.
On a different note, audiences can support us more by investing financially in your viewing pleasure. Be willing to pay to watch or view our films. We spend so much money and time and work so hard to bring a product that you love, please pay for it. It keeps us working, it keeps us going and it lets our investors know that we have a product that audiences love, which means more money invested from them and a better bigger project for you to see. We spend thousands upon thousands of dollars to make a film, not including the equipment, you can at least spend a few dollars to watch, however you watch your movies these days. We love making films for you and seeing your faces light up with wonderment or jump with fear.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
NuJuRu Studios’ mission is to entertain, inform, and inspire audiences around the world with compelling and unparalleled storytelling and to transport audiences to whole new worlds that motivate, engulf, and connect us all in powerful and creative ways.
My goal is to be one of the world’s leading creators, innovators, and producers of films and entertainment. continue to stay an independent filmmaker that produces and creates films that rival Hollywood. I want to create opportunities for new actors and actresses to get legs in the industry by being part of amazing films. I want to be a bridge between Hollywood and the Independent circuit putting Hollywood talent and Independent talent on the same screen. Though I’m Independent I would still like to direct and act in some Hollywood films.
