We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aloysius Tamasang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aloysius, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I was self -taught so I learned watching a lot of youtube videos. I also learned by going out to watch other DJ’s during live club sets like my good friend DJ Inturn.
Knowing what I know now, I would have loved to learn a lot of my techniques from more seasoned DJs as supposed to just youtube videos.
I think I picked up most of the essential skills that I needed, so I have no regrets there.
The obstacles that stood in the way of learning more was access.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I got into DJing through my love for producing. I wanted to learn how to scratch on my beats so I learned how to DJ to get that done.
I provide a DJ service and bring my flare of turntablism and a deep music knowledge to set myself apart from others.
I am most proud of making a career of my passion which I didn’t picture happening when I first began DJing.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. I wish I had made more of an effort reaching out to more seasoned DJs for advice about the craft and the industry. A lot of them are readily available to assist younger DJs but I was too scared to reach out for fear of being ignored.

How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media presence began with me creating an instagram page. I initially just used it as a space to promote my upcoming gis but once the video option became available I used it as a platform to showcase my talent. From 2017 to now I’ve made it a point to make DJ routine videos that have led me to going viral, compete in DJ competitions, and build a great following around the country.
My advice will be to make content showcasing whatever talent you have in an engaging way. Think of videos or content you like to see and emulate that with your given talent/gift.
