We recently connected with Alonso Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Alonso, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Considering that some people dive into acting right after high school, and I didn’t begin until I was 27, that’s a question that crossed my mind more times than I can count.
During my initial years of acting training, I used to think there was a slight disadvantage for me. I feared that I might be running behind. However, eventually I decided to look at it from a different perspective. Before pursuing acting, I had studied another career and worked in that field for quite some time. That experience provided me with a distinct perspective, more from a corporate/business point of view, which I wouldn’t have gained if I had entered the acting world immediately. I met people and made friends I wouldn’t have encountered if circumstances had been different. Also, I believe it is fair to say that I became a more mature person by the time I embarked on this journey. That brought me additional tools and resources to tap into for my acting pursuits.
This new perspective not only made it easier for me to continue honing my craft as an actor, but it also helped me appreciate the things I had already achieved in life.
Alonso, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Latin actor originally from Peru. I began my professional acting career in my home country in 2018 before making the decision to move abroad, bringing me to Los Angeles in September ’22. Since then, I have been studying and training here. While my recent focus has primarily been on working in front of the camera, my passion for being on stage is something I deeply miss.
Recently, I had the opportunity to step into the role of a director in a theater festival. Navigating our way to the finals was undeniably one of the highlights of my 2023. Although I’m eager to pursue directing for films, considering there are stories I want to tell, I see it as more of a mid-to-long-term goal. In the meantime, I’ll continue acting – I can’t envision myself not doing it anyway.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I can honestly say that 2020 was my toughest year yet. I felt I had gained a really nice momentum in my acting journey in 2019, but when Covid hit, it slammed the brakes on everything, as we all know. The thing is, in Peru, it took a really long time for “normality” to come back. I remember that even in 2021, there were way too many restrictions. All of that led to a place of huge doubt, and I felt really lost. I wasn’t sure if I should continue pursuing acting or maybe go back to my “old life” (the “normal life” I used to have working in an office). There were bills to pay, and with all the restrictions, there wasn’t much space for art. And no income either. No theaters opened, and production companies had little or no permissions to shoot.
I was feeling so stressed due to the circumstances that I pushed myself to start learning how to meditate (this was key), and that brought me much calm. I began doing my best to stay in a positive state, even though reality seemed to be the total opposite. Some months, I honestly can’t even remember how I managed to make ends meet, but it always happened. It was just my mental state that needed to change. If I had the chance to tell my past self from the beginning of 2020 that two years later I would be able to move abroad, I probably wouldn’t have believed it. But here I am, more grateful and eager to keep doing what I know I do best.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve always felt a strong connection to art, particularly to acting, movies, and music. For years, I questioned whether there was a distinct purpose or meaning behind my artistic dreams. After this 2023, where I delved into deeper concepts related to spirituality, I now feel a need to share some of the things I’ve learned that have greatly helped me throughout the past year. It might be a bit early to say, but these are the stories I aspire to tell in my future as a director, particularly through movies—an incredible and powerful platform. I envision presenting some of these ideas in a way that, for some people, might feel like sci-fi stories (which can also help reach a wider audience). Yet, for others, they might be able to understand what’s really behind those scripts. But that time will come. I’m also aware that gaining more experience as an actor, connecting with other directors, and learning from their work will ultimately enrich me and drive me toward this future goal of mine.
