Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alnev. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alnev, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I always had a passion for writing. In elementary school, I would write short stories and poetry. I think at my core, I’ve always been a writer. I started writing music at fifteen, when I had recently joined a new school in Pennsylvania called “Bais Menachem YDP.” It’s an incredible Jewish school that just so happens to be filled with creatives. At that point, I had pretty bad stage-fright. The thought of singing in front of a single person was incredibly nerve-racking, and I didn’t think I could do it. But luckily enough, I had a support system of friends and mentors at school who saw my potential and supported me. I don’t think I ever would’ve considered a music career if I hadn’t had that support.
Alnev, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ari Rabin, but as an artist I go by “Alnev.” I’m a singer, a songwriter, a musician, a multi-instrumentalist, a poet, and an avid sea-salt-and-vinegar chips eater. I’m originally from Coral Springs, Florida, but I’ve been based in Brooklyn, New York for the last two years. I’ve been writing/making/performing my own music for about 5 years now. My goal as an artist is to share my music with the world, to build a fanbase that feels seen and heard by my art. I think the power of vulnerability cannot be understated; I try to keep it as a constant in my art. I’m very proud of the music I’ve released so far, and I’m so excited to release more.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The fact that my music can make an impact on listeners is definitely the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. When people reach out to me and let me know how my music has positively impacted their lives, it means the world to me. Also, when fans know the words to my songs and sing along. There’s truly nothing like it.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think that it’s important to encourage and promote art within society. I personally believe that talent is wasted if it isn’t shared with the world. It’s important to embolden the next generation of artists to pursue their dreams, to work on their craft. and to share their abilities. I always love to hear poetry, see art, and hear music from fans of mine. Nowadays, we live in a society where algorithmic social media has a lot of control over our attention. The amazing thing about these algorithms is that they have brought way more attention to way more incredible artists. But at the same time, the algorithm can be incredibly demotivating to artists who don’t necessarily consider themselves to be content creators. I personally have a tough time posting on TikTok and Reels because I’ve always considered myself an artist more than a content creator. But it’s all about finding the right balance. I’m still working on it!
