We were lucky to catch up with Almas Tejani recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Almas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I have been in business since almost 25 years. I got married to a business man 20 years ago and I learnt all my business skills from him. He is a mentor, friend, and a wonderful husband. I myself am a little short tempered and very outspoken person.
But I learnt a few lessons/skills from my husband that I would like to share today. Outspoken about everything is not that great. Sometimes you have to say what people want to hear first and then give your point of view in a very nice way.
I also learnt that having good relation with every one is the key because you never know who will come handy when?
You have to go through a lot of compromises when doing a business such as keeping calm, being consistent, let go of your plans sometimes to accommodate someone else’s plans etc etc
But it all pays off eventually. Man power is the key and if you know how to deal with people no matter which area you work in, you are more likely to be successful.
I have been in Houston for only 3 years now and when I joined real estate I wasn’t sure if I will make it. But I used all the skills I learnt from my husband. I talked to each and everyone I saw about who I am and what I do, I explained them why they should hire me, and here I go almost 12 transactions from July 2022 to July 2023. Almost all the transactions are referrals. People that know me (even though very few) trust me and love me.
I hope my story motivates the readers and help you Achieve success in what you do. I strongly believe in Karma and do everything ethically and wholeheartedly That’s why I say on my social media most of the times “if you believe in the Best, why not hire the best”. Thank you for reading my story.
Almas , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those of you who don’t know me, I am born and raised in India, finished my bachelors of commerce (which is accounting here)in india, and came to USA about 22 years ago to fulfill my dreams and support my family.
I worked for my uncle for a while and I met my husband in a birthday party and got married. My husband owns gas stations and when we got married he owned 50% of one gas Station. We both were hard working and goal oriented. We never spent single penny on unnecessary things, never took vacations for first 3 years.
Currently we own multiple businesses and have 2 beautiful daughters. but I felt like i need my identity. I want people to know ME. So I opened a hair salon in Beaumont, ran it for 5 years and shut it down right before COVID.
We moved to Houston in 2020 for kids high school and I was home for about a year and half. I was bored to death. Lot of friends and families moved and I helped them buy houses from the same builder and one day the sales rep at Highland homes tells me “Almas you know so much about the houses, you have so many contacts, why don’t you think about becoming a realtor?”
I was like you are joking right? He said no. And I thought about it and decided to give it a try even though all my contacts have already bought houses. But I had experience in leasing commercial spaces from our own company. I took care of leasing/buying properties, and human resource.
So I thought there is no harm in learning. If I make it good, if not it will add to my knowledge. I went to champions school and finished my course in a month.
I joined BHHS end of July and my first transaction was on Sep 30 2022. It was fun. Very happy to see the smile on first time homebuyer. That motivated even more. I love working with first time homebuyers.
I started connecting with lenders, loan officers and title people. I can help anyone get approved for loan because I think I have been fortunate enough to find the best lenders.
My first listing was very interesting too. It was my cousins house and I told her if you want me to represent you, you should do these things. They weren’t very expensive repairs, but will help your house sell fast. She always liked me and trusted me. She did everything I asked to do and the listing went under contract in 48 hours.
That motivated me even more. Now I like listings too. After that there was no looking back. I just kept going Things Came to me effortlessly and now I enjoy what I do. Every business has its own challenges but overall this is the best thing that happened to me and I am very grateful.
What sets me apart from others is my honesty and integrity. If there is something I can’t do I will let the client know. Client is my first priority because I know that the client will appreciate that and refer me to others. So I never compromise on clients benefit and I think that has helped me succeed.
I work with Walzel Properties and I’m proud of it. Shelly is a wonderful mentor. And always available to answer any questions. I feel no matter I’m in business I’m always learning and I’m proud of it too.
I specialize in Richmond, Sugarland, Katy, Beaumont-Nederland, and Houston area. I am a good listener, hard working, always available, and people’s person. Connect with me for any real estate needs. .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Yes. I post on all the what’sapp groups about my business and one day this guy contacted me. He said he wants to buy a house in Harvest green. I asked him if he is currently working with a realtor he said no.
He had a budget that he wanted to be in and I spent almost a week to connect with all the sales people of all the builders because the model homes weren’t open yet. I found out all the plans and finally found something for him. I made an appointment with the sales rep and went there with him.
He liked the house and at the time we were writing the contract, he called me and said so and so agent is offering this much cash back and if you don’t give me that much cash back I will have to use them. My biggest mistake was I trusted him and didn’t sign buyers rep.
The company I was with at the time, I couldn’t do that much cash back and that agent happily took my client.
It was very heart breaking and I even cried. But that wasn’t gonna make me weak. It made me more strong. I switched companies so I can offer what other realtors in the area are offering so I don’t have to loose clients. I now make sure I get buyers rep signed.
The moral here is don’t let Anyone or
Anything let you down. Everything happens for a reason and makes you a stronger person.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“The power of your subconscious mind” by Joseph. Murphy is my bible. I read it a thousand times and every time I feel down or low I read this book. If you are planning to read make sure you are open minded and not just reading it but believing it and practicing the techniques in it. It will create miracles in your life. It did in my life. I am so blessed in my life and I think this book is the biggest reason.
My second favorite book is “you can heal your life” by Louise Hay. It is a great resource and was suggested to me by my favorite uncle and aunt.
I love Rumi quotes, every time I need an answer to a question, I look for Rumi quotes and I usually get an answer
I love Disney movies and I feel so connected because I think you should believe in something and it will come to you. This might sound funny but this is who I am. I love to laugh, let go, and live the moment.
I’m a fun loving person but if you mess with me, I can be really bad too. Lol.
