We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alma Rojas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alma below.
Hi Alma , thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I believe the biggest risk of all was starting! I had this idea of starting making mini doughnuts as a hobby fueled by pregnancy cravings but seeing the potential and how much people really liked the concept my 36 well pregnant self just took a leap of faith by starting an actual Facebook page and initiate this mini donut business thinking I would just wing it while it lasted… turns out God had bigger plans and we still here about to turn 1 year with this business just as my baby will also turn 1 in the same month.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure ! I am a 23 year old self taught baker and first time mom who started a home based business at 36 weeks of pregnancy knowing nothing about business or actual baking. In the eyes of everyone this is the perfect recipe for disaster but I don’t like to think negative and believe it or not it all worked out ! The Donut Shop specializes in decorated baked mini doughnuts that are made fresh by order and can be customized with any theme for any occasion so you can assure uniqueness with each order. Also offer a wide variety of presentations for your mini doughnuts and different flavors of coatings and icings ! For our pop ups in markets I usually offers our “messy donuts” which are plain baked mini donuts that you can customize by choosing your drizzles and toppings from a different variety of sweet fun options. For these we offers caramel, Nutella, marshmallow cream , condensed milk, and as for toppings we have a bunch of options such as fruity pebble’s, crushed Oreos, pretzels, peanuts, different candies and cereals. It’s just so much fun to come and customize your own mini donuts just they way you like it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Farmer’s market has been an awesome way to connect with new costumers from there we can find the best way to get in touch for when they need and want some awesome mini doughnuts.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Like I had mentioned before, I honestly had no plan when it came to starting this business, I was so used to just “winging it “ all the time, I actually started with no money. Thankfully I had all the ingredients I needed at home but I do remember spending $20 for plastic boxes for packaging and $4 for a baking pan at the dollar store. From there every new order would help to cover for the ingredients of the next one and as I kept on making more order I started learning about how to price things and different skills as I found necessary for managing my business. I’m still learning and it doesn’t bother me to learn in the process because I love learning so much.
